South Africa's paralympian athlete Oscar Pistorius has allegedly accidentally shot dead his girlfriend at his house in Pretoria.

The 26-year-old Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner because of the carbon fibre blades he runs on after having his legs amputated below the knee, has allegedly accidentally shot dead his girlfriend on Thursday morning, Beeld reported.

He had mistaken her for a robber, the Afrikaans daily reported on its website on Valentine's Day.

Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed she was shot in the arm and head. She died on the scene.

In September, Pistorius brought the curtain down on a summer of thrills when he won the final Paralympic track gold medal with a dominant display in the 400m.

Pistorius, who races wearing carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400m semifinals though he was disappointed not to make the final.

Well we know she is dead - and that he shot her. What we don't know is why.

And they are supposing that as he hasn't always treated girlfriends nicely - that this may have been the result of a fight

There is no way to know now. If it was an accident - it may break the man.

A case of murder?

A case of fearing for your life in a country that has the inability to keep violence under control?

Given if it was a dark room and you couldnt make out who it is I would probably have shot first and asked questions later. But you can't deny something about this is suspicious.

Lengthy discussion over here

Some of those comments are rather punny, and insensitive.

Fist article said he swot her twice, now reports are saying 4 shots... I'm not forming an opinion on this one until we know.

Come on - her sneaking in at that time of the morning is not unusual. I did it when I was young and adventurous. 3am - snuck into his flat in the middle of Hillbrow. Boy was he surprised - and boy was it worth it. But then - we don't believe in guns in the home.

wait, what?

last time i stopped believing in hangovers, i paid the price...

still believe in chairs, though.... also, whiskey.

i find it a highly suspicious conjunction of pre-marital violence and over-hyped greeting-card marketing day...

other than that, i will wait for something concrete before saying... meh...

However sad it may be, the following is also true. In SA, sneaking into somebody's home in the middle of the night is like making a joke with an airsoft gun by pushing it into a random persons face. Asking for trouble, you just don't do it. Though we don't have all the info.

Oooohhh kaaaayyyyy. Perhaps I should have said that we don't believe in keeping guns in our own home. Yes we know they exist in other people's. I know of too many stories where someone has accidentally shot someone in their family. Not to mention the times it happens deliberately. Sadly - mining towns have a high incidence of family murders. That doesn't count shooting the boyfriends I must point out.

My nanny has great insight into this - she believes the girlfriend was cheating and was caught sneaking back into the house. I shall leave that there for you puppy :D

News24 wrote:Police also expressed "surprise" at reports that the shooting was an accident.

"The SA Police Service were just as surprised this morning to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar," Beukes said.

Accidental my backside. Police have responded to previous disturbances at his house and neighbours heard shouting and fighting hours before and just before the shooting. Let's see how it pans out though, I just hope justice is served. I don't know either people so pretty meh to me, but another murder in SA to add to the crime stats...

Too bad it is our SA ambassador of rising above your adversity, as perceived by the athletics community. Beautiful girl too. It is sad when you think about how a lot of people's heroes keep falling, like Neil Armstrong as well.
