Scanner voltage query.

I have a Canoscan FB1210U. I was scanning a document when scanning stopped at 76% completion.
I discovered that the green LED was not on then verified that the 12V adapter had packed up.
I tried a couple of variable voltage adaptors but each one resulted in either photoshop not picking up the scanner's presence, or photoshop stopped responding, or the preview button did not respond and finally, I got a preview, a page
full of multi colors wnen I had a white sheet with some black text in the scanner.
Using a 12V adapter not connected to scanner, my meter gives a reading of 18V, but once connected to the scanner
the voltage drops to 9V.
I don't know what the input voltage must be for scanner to work properly or whether the scanner has also packed up.
Any advise/info would be appreciated.

Sounds like your scanner has had it's last scan.

How do the amps and waveforms compare between the two adapters?

I am not technically equipped to check amp and waveforms.
Basically, I would like to know what input voltage the scanner requires to work "properly"
The safest option would be for me to buy a new power supply from Canon but this would
be of no use if the scanner has also died, possibly because I fed it the incorrect voltage???

Is the oem adapter not rated with the output voltage and current?
Might just be less hassle to replace the scanner as a whole- not even sure it would be that much more expensive than only replacing the power source, especially if you don't know if the scanner is still working.

The amperage and waveform should be given on the original adaptor and the one you are trying now. The waveform will be a line with a dotted line on top of it, if I am not mistaken.

The most important bit though is the amperage. Your new adapter might not be able to provide enough of it.

Basically what Kalster means is check if the adaptors you have been trying are AC or DC output (it should be the same type as the oem)

That also, but you get different types of DC. That shouldn't be a problem though. The main thing (other than voltage) is if the new adaptors are able to provide enough current. AFAIK

Really?

Well, yeah, but it shouldn't be important here. Don't know why I brought it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_current

Was on Wikipedia just now. lol.

Doesn't look like it should be important here as you say.

OK. The original power supply as follows:
Input - 240V AC 0.4A Output 12V DC 1.25A

My AC adapter : Input - 240V AC Output set to 12V DC - current 0.5A (not stated whether input or output) 9w

This is all I could get off the adaptors -

Well 9W and 12V leaves with roughly 0.75A which isn't enough.

I've tried with a larger power supply.
Output set at 12V
1A - 12 VA
Unfortunately there seems to be a bad connection at the scanner input socket
so,unless I can sort this out will have to buy a new scanner.
