DSTV with more HD

The 1st of October marked the day that DSTV is finally bringing more content in HD.

Channels 101-110 are now Mnet and other dedicated movie channels that instead of being numbered MM1, MM2, MM stars are now renamed to the genre. Not just that but HD PVR subscribers are getting auto uptuned to HD on all of the first 10 channels.

...now my problem is that channels 301-305 are all still SD channels so no Avengers, Thunder Cats or Legend of Korra in HD.

It raises another question. Does the HD PVR simply upscale an SD picture to 1080i? Yes you read correctly. DSTV has upped their output to 1080i instead of the 720p. Already things are starting to look up.

...so about that youtube and onlive functionality?

There was a lengthy discussion on MyBB about it, the general sentiment seemed to be Meh.
They didn't mention anything about how SD is handled though, that I can recall.
I'll see if I can find the link.

As for myself, I don't really watch tv, apart from the odd bike race on Sunday, which even that I sometimes skip. And of course some rugby, for the sake of a braai.

Edit: Found it
A bit technical and not so much on the channels itself though.

To be honest, I haven't actually checked what the new channels are- like I said. Don't really care about tv.
And yes- some people will always moan- fact of life.

R655 for DSTV premium with HD functionality. That's per month btw. Looked at the itunes alternative aswell as bluray options. For an entire series in HD you look for $30-50 for a season pass that spans 13-26 episodes. Then a bluray movie these days sets you back around R150 - 250 (R150 for BD, R200 BD/DVD combo, R250 BD/3DBD).

My sister says that the quality of the HD channels has diminished to her.

I wasn't able to get 5.1 from my dstv until recently when I bought a coax cable and even more recently managed to get a 3d tv that allows for optical 5.1 out.

rarely watch so net effect is... meh...

they could keep the sub-standard HD and push better content but this is probably cheaper... "look! pretty!"...

*only acquiesced to getting DSTV because of history/discovery channels which have morphed into ice-road swamp people of air disaster alien hunters... :/

I'm convinced you only have DSTV because you don't know what you want to watch else you would end up just getting what you want and leaving the rest. I am and was always a fan of any animated channel and have found myself watching more TV since last year.

Burnout from playing games or not finding anything to do on the internet.

It is definitely a higher resolution than SD but you get the same image quality issues when watching streaming content online with a noticeable blocking on the image.
