What makes women happy

A new study has found a gene that appears to make women happy, but it doesn’t work for men. The finding may help explain why women are often happier than men, the research team said.
Scientists at the University of South Florida (USF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute reported that the low-expression form of the gene monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) is associated with higher self-reported happiness in women. No such association was found in men.

Oh come on. So this worrier gene (MAOA) that makes people aggressive, leads them to become alcoholics, antisocial behaviour promoter...... is what makes women happy? I think not. I know many unhappy women (and not all of them are married either). They claim it breaks down serotonin and that makes women happy. Well I have a serotonin problem and I am still very happy. Can't remember if I lack the hormone or my brain just cannot use it - but I find that I am a happy enough person without the stuff.
I think they just happened to talk to very happy women. A coincidence.

And here I thought I was just a naturally happy person. Mmmm wonder if I can increase my level of happiness significantly?
And I would disagree with a portion of that article. Saying that sex without condoms is a sign of a poor self image, that it is linked to depression. Well that is just ludicrous. Sex without a condom is considered an extreme sport. One of the riskiest (although long lasting) of the extreme sports. Joking aside - women who don't use condoms get carried away in the heat of passion. They leave all logical reasoning and go with the moment. They do not plan ahead. I would hardly link that to poor self image. They are generally popular - or am I wrong?

That part probably didn't make the study.
I did see a show on TV once where they did an experiment to see if diet changes the taste of semen. They got guys to spend like a week eating only certain foods (so one guy ate only fish, another guy only burgers, another guy only veggies, etc.) and then got their partners (who were not privy to the diets) to taste the semen to see if they could detect the diet from the taste. Interestingly, the fish and burger diets were easily detected by the partners. The veggie diet was a little more difficult to detect.

and apparently it goes both ways...
no wonder i have to take pills when i'm not with RRF...
but semen tastes disgusting and takes sometime to get used to... a week or 2 is not enough time...
and i agree with what Tribble said about girls not using condoms and it being a sign of poor self worth... it's rubbish... what if the girl is on the pill... and maybe she could be allergic to latex... it's got nothing to do with poor self worth...

@ Mousey - I can tell you it makes a huge difference. The general health of the guy has an effect too
@Jamin - I shall try and force him to eat it. He is not a fan of fruit though
@KK - Luckily each person is different but when you are in a relationship, both partners have to be tolerant of eachother's like and dislikes. You should never feel forced to do something you don't like doing. But feel free to do somethings that make him happy - even if you are indifferent to them. And don't knock something until you have tried it

He does eat apples. Wonder if I can convince him to try a few other fruits. If would have definite benefits for him when I test to see if they make a difference

Yes - I think this would be a very good experiment. And I will let you know if ingestion makes me a happier person - happier than usually of course. Must admit - that I generally do feel rather elated after - perhaps it is merely a side effect of the additional hormones. Perhaps it is something else entirely
Oh yes - and I would appreciate the fix.

why embarrassed its a normal thing .... I do not understand the shyness of people when it comes to sexual topics. As scientists, we must question this research with personal accounts (im just playing

Like I dont understand, one guy I knew had sex with a prostitute and something about the condom and blood I cant remember, he waited 4 days to come for an HIV test lol, instead of asking then and there, "i think ive been exposed to HIV, please help me" ... oh well couldve prevented his HIV status going positive if he wasnt so embarrassed to seek help. Now nothing can be done
