They say a dog is a man's best friend, but to John Unger, a Wisconsin resident, his dog, Schoep, means everything.
Unger adopted Schoep, named after the famous Wisconsin ice cream, when he was just a puppy, and the two have been together ever since. Now, at 19 years old, Schoep has arthritis and has trouble sleeping, the Pioneer Press reports. Unger found that water is therapeutic for his pained buddy, so he takes Schoep into Lake Superior and lulls him to sleep.

I'd euthanise the dog.

Re: A Man and His Best Friend in Lake Superior
Honestly, I would too, but I suppose some people just can't bring themselves to do so.jamin_za wrote:I'd euthanise the dog.
My mother-in-law lives with us, and her dog is ancient and riddled with arthritis but she just refuses to euthanise the animal.

It is far crueler in my eyes to be keeping the animal alive...
JUSTICE, n A commodity which is a more or less adulterated condition the State sells to the citizen as a reward for his allegiance, taxes and personal service.

It really depends. If the dog is happy, I would not be able to put it down in good conscience. However, if the quality of life of the dog had decreased to the point where the dog was now suffering, then yes, i would put the dog down.Anakha56 wrote:+1jamin_za wrote:I'd euthanise the dog.

I have a 14y/o Collie, who is not the healthiest dog. She has dementia, kidney problems and some other problems. BUT, she is happy. She's not suffering. Anyone who has met her recently would agree that she is not suffering. So would it be justified to put her down just because she has a medical condition but is not suffering?

But if you have to put your dog to sleep in a lake because he's in too much pain to fall asleep any other way?

I have not met the dog, so I can't make a comment on whether it should be put down or not.
Sleeping issues and arthritis do not necessarily mean the dog's quality of life is bad. Just as no sleeping issues does not mean quality if life is good.

Sure looks like the dog is enjoying it!
