They also rent out tor....er...interrogation facilities. An extensive dungeon was discovered during the digging of the foundations, and it seemed shame not to turn it into a money spinner. There's nothing quite the ambiance of a dank, mysterious, and uncharted medieval dungeon.

Fish, fruit salad, and nuts were on offer at our Financial Year End Function, but there were two aspects of the CEO's speech that troubled me. He stated that those who only worked for ELCB to collect a payslip should be working elsewhere, and that he wanted to turn the
yearly function into a Day of Thanksgiving to the majority's imaginary invisible friend. [Without whom, some say, ELCB would go out of business. What utter tosh, and an insult to those who put in ridiculous hours to bring in work, I say!] The company has become increasingly religiose, with staff meetings preceded by prayers. This is where I exercise my right to leave the room.

You may be doing a fine job of ostracizing yourself at work.
No need to leave the room and draw negative attention to yourself when you can just sit quietly thru it and think of how silly they all look.

Nothing wrong with a little lie by omission when it could be your freakin job at stake - your principles don't pay the bills after all.

ELCB sounds like the its run by the ANC youth league. Start polishing up your CV

I don't think that one's employer can make attending religious ceremonies mandatory.

If I gave anyone the impression that I make a point of telling anyone at work that I think that their understanding reality is tenuous, I don't, and typically do not respond when someone tries to preach at me, or says that they will continue to try to convert me.

/This would not be the fist time that I have been subjected to harassment in the workplace. It was nasty, but those responsible were told not to interfere with me or my medical treatment.

They were badgering me about my mental health, and taking it upon themselves to "counsel" me in such a way that it

This happened towards the end of last year. The move to the new building has also not been without its problems.

It's his company/he's at the wheel, so if they wanted to have a Yearly Firewalking and Pancake Day, I guess staff might be able to have input but it's his decision, isn't it? (I don't know the structure of the company.)

That's perfectly fine. You're well within your right to do so. Might I suggest joining an organisation like Solidarity www.solidarity.co.za in case you need representation in any labour matters?

No, we live in a democracy. And it's a democracy that guarantees freedom OF religion, which includes the freedom to be an atheist if one so chooses.

Ja, that sucks. Depending on the type of work that you do, talk (and try to prove) to your boss about how much this is decreasing your productivity. Do you have a number of calls closed per month or maybe even proof from the doctors treating you that it is negatively affecting you as a person?

You are brave to leave. I would just sit there and listen. As they need to respect your need not to believe - you have to respect theirs to believe. Besides - how long are these prayers?
