an E-Tag is only for scary cats that is too afraid to take back roads in JHB and PTA.

Our anti-E-Tag campaign should start with something like.... grow a pair and use alternate routes.

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

The problem I have with back roads, is exactly what doo_much said- they're ALWAYS flooded with traffic :?

Yes, Syko.

I don't like the whole toll thing any more than anyone else, but spending 2+ hours on a trip that should only take 1 hour eats into my bottom line. :?

True.
It eats time, and literally money in the form of extra fuel.

What are you smoking... I want some of that stuff too...

My fuel usage increases by about 5% when I'm on the back roads. It is nowhere near a R550 increase a month. And I have yet to be stuck in traffic for 2 hours on the back roads. Clearly you don't know the back roads all that well... I suggest you get a GPS :P

R550 being a 100% increase, I can see how it might not happen
But, if I have to choose between 2.5hrs, 6.2L/100km or 3 - 4 @ 7.2L/100km... :?
It's a no-brainer. And a gps (in za at least) won't tell you anything about traffic patterns.

Didn't TomTom release a gps for SA that supposedly updates with live coverage of traffic, ~ providing you with alternative routes?

I have a phone for that. It's always been adequate. I see no need to buy an additional gadget that does everything it can already do (sans traffic report- which I have radio for anyway).

True. but I find the radio traffic to be hopeless. they either tell you about an accident that does not exist or they manage to skip a massive accident the is causing a one hell of a jam. But Jacaranda and 702 seem to have the best traffic report, unlike highfail and 5FM

It very rarely happens that jacaranda's trafic report doesn't tell me beforehand what is happening.

I will just build the toll fees into my fees - so the clients will have to pay. I will not be sitting in traffic if I do not have to. I spend way too much time driving to have it take more than it needs too.

But I do not have my e-tag yet and won't until I see what happens with the court cases.

RRF - remember our situations are not the same. I just need to get from the south to the north. And then only twice or three times a month.

However.

I'm still sure Stig's gonna get an e-tag... :whistling:

Idea: If everyone gets more than one tag, say a about three or four, would it not be possible to overload their system and trip it up with the amount of traffic in GP?

@doo: yes our situations are different. Also I drive at 05h30 in the morning and at that time there is not much traffic to begin with.

LOLWUT?

The Lurker navigates by looking up the route on Google Maps beforehand (using Streetview if available) and memorising it. After the first time, the Google bit becomes unnecessary.

I've never owned a GPS (and I don't use the GPS feature on my phone), and believe that on me, it would be money wasted.

But in GP there are no street names, so you end up getting lost.
