Mozilla announces Firefox long-term release

From their blog:
We are pleased to announce that the proposal for an Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox is now a plan of action. The ESR version of Firefox is for use by enterprises, public institutions, universities and other organizations that centrally manage their Firefox deployments. Releases of the ESR will occur once a year, providing these organizations with a version of Firefox that receives security updates but does not make changes to the Web or Firefox Add-ons platform. We have worked with many organizations to ensure that the ESR balances their need for the latest security updates with the desire to have a lighter application certification burden.

No real surprise as to why they're doing it -- their rapid release plan isn't popular with enterprises, who place long-term stability above being on the bleeding edge the entire time. The way I see it, it's going to work out similar to Ubuntu, who releases a new version every six months but release a LTS (long-term support) version every two years.

The guys who are sick of dealing with broken addons every time a new FF version is released will like this too, as now it will be a less frequent problem (if they stick to ESR versions). ;)

Try using the Add-on Compatibility Reporter (here). It's more for beta testers. It disables FF for checking if the add-on is compatible with the new version.
Downside, if it's not compatible, you find out the hard way when it just refuses to work the way it is meant to.

I disabled most of my add-ons, FF runs faster IMO now

That's all well and good, but when will they address the leaky memory that has led to me favouring Chrome or Opera over FF :?:

What leaky memory? (This is a genuine interest question) I have not noticed any problems.

Sometimes it is open all day. Is that not considered long?

No. I can have an instance of a browser open for a week or longer sometimes, doing all sorts of things in various tabs
FF's memory footprint go over 500MB after a day

Chrome seems to treat every tab as a unique exe, and closing one down within the main browser will recover the memory - ditto Opera and even IE 8 and 9
FF however refuses to give memory back.

Jamin that's understandable and all, but remind me again why you would let a browser run for a week straigh or longert?

Okay, so I'm asking why this browser doesn't do something that other browsers can do, IE release memory back to the OS or at least reuse the memory efficiently over time.

And your response is to ask me why I would want to do this :?:

Seems legit.

I have pages I keep open all the time because I look at them that often.
Our fault system at work is web-based and my fault list stays open permanently... several other pages, including this site... why close then only to have to reopen them in abit

i have noticed that AVG tells me that a lot of memory is being used by FF and don't i want to close and reopen it...
i haven't noticed any function loss or that FF becomes slower tho...
