Agree with most sentiments that your AV is just there in case you slip up and visit some dodgy sites. It's there to protect you when your common sense have taken a leave of absence.

I've been using AVG free since I got my pc and the internet and never ever (touch wood) had to deal with a virus.

Here is my tips to keep your pc virus free.

1. Don't visit or download dodgy things.
2. Don't open mail attachments from people you don't know.
3. Don't just plug in any removable drive or memory stick into your machine.
4. Keep your AV and Malware scanners up to date.

Keeping with this I've never picked up nasties. Most of these things should be common to all of us by now, but it's still very valid.

The first article is from 2010 and the second speaks about mobile AV.

I've never had any issues with AVG really. :D I'm quite happy with it.

Use an old PC for this if you must

As well as from people you do know......so just don't open attachments at all

Wow, fantastic tips on security here from people obviously not living on planet Earth...

I don't know where you security guru's are from, but on this planet it's kind of hard to never open an email attachment or use a portable storage device....
And the odds that you or someone who uses your PC will never (knowingly or unknowingly) visiting a dodgy site are slim to none.

Jams, I did not say you should not use removable drives. :D What I meant to say is, only plug in drives and memory sticks from people you trust and know also has the level of intelligence as you.

I will never plug in a memory stick or a removable drive from someone I don't really know that well and what they do with their pc.
My rules have kept me virus free for...well....since I've owned a pc really.

There is a guy in my office that always complains that he found trojans and virusses on his pc. Weekly! He has a paid up to date AV and running Malware-Malbytes! Now one thing springs to mind....he is visiting some really dodgy sites. I've been on some and never have I picked up a virus or trojan so how dodgy must those sites be for him to get infected weekly???

I've known some people who have only used flash drives from people of equal intelligence and that is precisely WHY their machines have been riddled with viruses. :D
