PAL vs NTSC in HD?

I've come to a slight problem regarding the PAL and NTSC matter. As far as I can tell the only difference between the 2 are on SD levels with NTSC going up to 720x480 @60hz and PAL 720x576 @50hz (I might be wrong with the PAL lines).
Now my question goes like this: Does PAL/NTSC play a roll with the HD resolutions or were they left behind in the analog days?
Generally HD is considered 60hz at 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p with 60hz or even 50hz with the Mnet HD case. So do NTSC games still run faster than PAL games on the HD format?
