I'm embarrassed to say that I never used a chimney starter till about six months ago. Love it!

The tile draws moisture from the dough so you get that delicious crispy base like from a pizza oven. For that smoky flavor, use wood. Make your bases thin and cook for 7-10 minutes per pie. Got my dad-in-law to fashion a paddle for me and all, so quite a good setup going there.
Wow, thanks. Considering how much I love pizza, this is going to make me very, very happy. :)

I kind of get rusty's aversion to the idea. I often stare in bemusement at people who "vang gees" or get swept up in some kind of social paradigm, like the colour sports at school, political rallies, dance clubs, etc. I am not saying I don't partake in such activities at all, but I am just not that kind of guy, being an introvert and all.

But, having said this, I certainly appreciate the value in being able to switch off and just go with the flow, engage in mindless chatter (generally I'm very poor in this), just relax and be with one's friends and family. I love a good braai. It is not so much just the food that goes with a braai, but the social aspect of it as well.

The idea of National braai day, whatever it's origin or utility is, is just a small impetus towards doing what nearly everyone loves: a good braai with all that goes with it.

I don't feel "tricked" into taking part in it and don't feel that me taking part takes away from my ability to recognise the significance behind these kinds of things. Perhaps being able to recognise where it comes from and not letting that affect my choice about it is yet another level of control.

Many, many, many forum points to rusty for being a better droll troll than most....

As for National Braaiday? I'd be scorching meat anyway. And I'd rather call it that than celebrate 'Heritage Day'.

so there.

I don't care if it's marketing hype, it's still as good a reason as any to whip the braai and coals out!!

ahh... i see... we need the pinched off product of some faceless marketing sphincters to give us a 'reason' to whip out the meat and beer and engage in some serious socialising...

silly me... been getting it wrong all these years... probably on the wrong day as well

all i can say is thank goodness for re-branding! one pointless day has magically turned into a not-so-pointless day!

i refuse to see the light because i fear it's a rapidly approaching frontal lobotomy.

And with that you have just described Valentine's Day / Father's Day / Mother's Day. Well done.
