Issa not the same...

Guess it all boils down to personal taste and preference?

No it boils down to pro's and con's. Personally I would not mind seeing a sidebar for instance but then again I see the point why it is not there. Same with this Thanks button thing. I see the reason why it is not there. I also see the reasons you want one. The reasons for not having it is more compelling than those for it.

For instance:
Argument for: I'd like to save myself a couple of keystrokes....
Argument against: You already have that by simply clicking on a button labeled "Quote".

Argument for: It enables me to categorized someone as helpful
Argument against: You are merely creating a ranking system. Ranking systems are not on the forum for various reasons already mentioned in numerous other threads. Anything which will constitute as a ranking system is thus a no-go. Besides that how will the ranking system work. How will you make it fair and unbiased. How will it be monitored. What should happen depending on the different ranking achieved. What difference is the ranking going to make in the long run. Then you have to ask yourself ... WHYYYYYYYYYYY

Whoa cowboy!

Long speech - I actually agree with the 'Thanks' button sentiment. And although I don't understand the why, I accept the sidebar decision. Which doesn't mean I'm going to stop mentioning it...

Hehehe.... One of the main Why's for the sidebar not being there is the fluid width layout and the need of keeping the layout the same as it is on the main site. The main site unfortunately dictates what we can and can not do in terms of layouts on the forum. The other why is that the newer versions of phpBB has a different mechanism for layout and theming and the themes with the sidebars either does not work correctly or will not be supported in future versions. The only way to accomplish this is to basically create another page which will "import" the forum into it. This is a very nasty way of designing pages as it would cause search engines to ignore the forum when creating search catalogs. Secondly this way of doing it will mean that the sidebar will also not update every time you refresh the page as it is in essence a different page. You will also not be able to use the browser's refresh button on a thread as it will take you back to the forum index which you probably don't want. Also the sidebar actually does add a sizable performance knock. Although the server is a relative beast it also adds to the weight of the page and makes your access to the actual forum slower. The sidebar has to do a lot of queries to the back end phpBB database in order to compile the data you would wish to see in it.

Should I go on or do you understand now?

When creating a feature on a product the one question you have to ask yourself is "So What?" ...in other words, what diffs would not having it make in your life.

So kill the idea.

Those just take you to G3AR's official Foozebuck and Twit pages.

But you would know that if you clicked them. ;)

Yes, it was a brilliant addon.

Well done Sherlock. Ever considered that I did?

The Vleisboek link is http://www.facebook.com/G3AR but should be something like maybe http://www.facebook.com/G3AR.NET?

As for the Twitter link - who cares?

The only paranoid moments this forum causes me is when it insists on leaving LSO cookies on my computer.

This is a pointless debate. its been up numerous times and the situation will never change.

And no offence intended but its clear from a few posts in this thread and in previous discussions that some of the mods don't know what they are talking about...

I can accept an argument that it adds little added value, but arguing that it will inflate egos or create some sort of rank inferiority or superiority complex is bollocks.

Not so. I have seen it on XDA often. The guy with least amount of posts and rep will get ignored when giving the correct answer and the guy with the most rep and posts will give the exact same answer and gather the rep. That sort of problem can and has happened on numerous forum boards. I used to be a member of SS as well as PCF and when they implemented their rep system the "click" group just started giving themselves mass rep and what did it accomplish in the end? Sweet bugger all although Stu will probably disagree with me about SS... ;)

I dont see the value of the system and sure abuse might not happen but is a simple typed "Thank You" to much to ask for?

lol, not at all. SS is a perfect example of why ranking systems are stupid, but then SS has an actual ranking system, and not a thanks button. A thanks button ranks the post/thread, not the user. Surely there is a way to implement a thanks button that doesn't keep track of how many times a user has been thanked?

What value would be added to the PCF/G3AR forum by indicating the amount of people who are saying "Thanks" to a particular post? If the user is looking for information in the forum, surely the subject of the thread would be more helpful than a thank count?
