I think it's only insecure people that seeks validation from others.

If I post something interesting and there is not one reply or thank you from anyone, it's no skin off my nose. Use it, don't use it.

well on our work forum we implemented this thanks button because people kept posting thanks and we had like 20 posts of thanks which tends to fill up the page very quick... who wants to read thanks 20 times.

So now we have a thanks button and its much cleaner.

So yes i would say its a good addition. i see it reducing spam? maybe?

I have no idea who or what Boxy is Tribbs.

Hmmm... If anyone is refering to me/my post above, it's not about validation for me, it's about relationships with people, community if you will. I do, however, appreciate the occasional thank you.

again. if you're resorting to counter-based enticements to improve the quality of posts, you've lost the battle. :|

not forgetting that you're introducing a market-based inducement for posting as opposed to the current altruistic one.
fair warning - once it enters the market, there is no going back and, generally speaking, market-based systems come with a whole basket full of negative issues... (especially for those who's ego requires validation of their every utterance...)

In that case we'd better ask for a 'troll' button for rusty and jamin...

It's the letter Phi, to symbolize the golden ratio. :)

No further feedback from Ron2k on the viability of a thanks button?

Ronny can be frustrating that way. His posts can be separated by days of silence. Sometimes even weeks

As he said, he's still waiting for an overwhelming reason that such a feature is necessary.

But mousey - the fact that the women want one should be all the reason he needs. ;-) Welcome back btw.

I've been around. Just silent. The last two weeks have been crazy. It seems to have culminated in my body forcing me to stay in bed for the weekend, so I am parking off here at home, which is weird for me on a Sunday.

To be honest, I think some of the arguments in favor of the thanks button are good, but then some of the arguments against it are also sound. I'm going to side with the whatever group.

Sorry to hear that you are not well. Hope it doesn't last long.

I don't care either way - but it makes sense to have one. Would save a lot of time but then I am likely to click the button and still make a post. So it is not essential for me

i agree that its useful when an individual post can be rated, not a user.

I can't say I've ever seen a thanks button abused...

And as for giving repuation points, the cure is simple... you limit the rep. 30 Days or 10 Reps to other users before you can give the same user more rep...

Personally I think a rep button would be better. Give rep for helpful and humorous posts and let the mods take away rep for bad behaviour, spam and sillyness.

And another thing, we'll be able to drive Rusty nuts, to the point where he froths at the mouth for getting rep points

Yeah there is that - but then people like me will always be in negative points. And that is not good for my rep.

Again.... how about just saying thank you. Why the hype about a thank you button or a reputation button. All you are doing is complicating everything. First of all there is no real need for it. Secondly this has been discussed to death already.

Nowadays it's an integral part of a forum. It's a very popular and prominent vBulletin addon and even SMF has this feature bundled. Probably only phpBB which is lagging behind.

Thank you Bladerunner...

See what I did there :?:
Easy... why can't that be popular ?
Are people too lazy to actually type or is there actually some benefit to be had from adding such a feature ?

Well, after reading the thread, I've pretty much made my mind up now...

This is not going in - I believe that the negatives of such a feature outweigh the positives.
