One thing I would however go for is if we can mark a thread as being solved. That way you know more of what to expect in the thread. You could possibly mark the post that solves the question/discussion. Something like this can actually add value to the thread rather than an arbitrary button saying thanks....

Oh and in the case of the thanks button who is the person being thanked going to know who thanked him ?

You've clearly never been on a forum with a thanks button... :P It notifies the user by mail or the user can pick up who thanked them online...

Anakha, thanks for that, I actually wanted an example... my counter argument is that bit-tech has a very successful rep system. granted it's impossible to abuse, but its also successful because the rep doesn't mean anything...it's humorous. every few hundred / thousand points of rep, the message changes... I think mine says something about cheesecake... (Cheesecake is a bit-tech meme, much like the Blue Lurker is a PCF meme  )

yes, I agree that typing out thank you is better. but do you really want to Necro a 3 month old topic you found useful, just to say thanks? Well unless you are firestrm... :P

And Ron, I seem to recall your forum had a ranking system based on post count  :eyebrow:

The question came up a few years ago and it was also slammed down - so the users started giving "Internets" to one another. Was fun for a while but got tiring.

Why not just install a plugin and give it a 2 week test run?

Yeah, because all it is is installing a plugin...
No need to investigate what it may impact or test it in a dev environment first make sure it wont mess up the boards.
I'm sure Ron has nothing better to do with his free time than spend it all making potentially pointless changes to the forums on a whim.
Come on, give "Thanks" a chance!

Thanks buttons generally include functionality to show who thanked you, but would it really be that important to know who thanked you?

It's such a pathetically simple system, I don't see it having an effect on any other plugins or integral parts of the forum.

I wonder why Ronny has let this thread run for so long - they never had any intention of implementing it. We have asked before and it was turned down.

^^ I would have implemented it had there been compelling reasons to. Like I said though, having considered all the arguments made, I still believe that the negatives outweigh the positives.

I still miss the point then - what are the negatives with adding credit to a post? It doesn't add to the user. So they are not rep points. Are people really that childish that they will get their buddies to click their button to raise its credit? or be sad when no one clicks their button? Oh ok - I understand now. We will get people who do this kinda thing. <Tribble shuts her mouth>

Yes people are that childish. Especially on this forum.

A thanks button normally adds 1 point of rep to a thanked user.

Read my post:

Not so. I have seen it on XDA often. The guy with least amount of posts and rep will get ignored when giving the correct answer and the guy with the most rep and posts will give the exact same answer and gather the rep. That sort of problem can and has happened on numerous forum boards. I used to be a member of SS as well as PCF and when they implemented their rep system the "click" group just started giving themselves mass rep and what did it accomplish in the end? Sweet bugger all although Stu will probably disagree with me about SS... ;)

I dont see the value of the system and sure abuse might not happen but is a simple typed "Thank You" to much to ask for?

vBulletin's rep system has measures which can be implemented to prevent "Thanks Spam". If they don't use it, they have only themselves to blame.

It seems as though a user can disable the functionality in their UCP?

If so - looks good.
