Busy installing on a virtual machine now :).

I tried to install the 64bit consumer preview in a dual boot with win7 on my machine but it got to a point where it gave an error "setup could not configure windows to work on this hardware". I tried again and it failed a second time saying something like "windows could not complete the installation please try again".

I have a intel i5 2500k with 4gig of ddr3 ram and an ASUS P8P67 motherboard. Using an nVidia 560ti display card.

My existing OS is win7 64bit so I doubt the 64bit is the issue. Any ideas?

i downloaded it up until the point where it was 2.4... something complete of 2.5 GB, and then it failed

won't be trying anytime soon again :(

VirtualBox ?

benefits of doing so includes snap-shotting and cloning... helpful when you're testing deployment and net code...

I have been running Windows 8 C.P. since the weekend.
Whether or not I like it depends on when you ask me. :-P
It is required a fair amount of adjustment. Microsoft doesn't seem to have gone out of its way to educate users as to how to navigate the new interface.

Cut the Rope hangs on my machine. :x

That metro interface is horrendous on a PC IMO, yikes.

Why are PC users even contemplating Windows 8 as a viable OS :?:

I hope I'm proved wrong, but from everything I've seen so far it is shaping up to be another Vista.

Which means everyone who uses it will hate it.... except for Stuart, who will say it's 'not that bad'

Vista was "not that bad" (compared to W8 anyway). Win8 is a horrendous monstrosity which I will not even pirate.

Well.....now that I am getting used to it, Windows 8 it is not that bad.
Probably the only reason I was grumbling about it was because I was too lazy to learn how to use it.

I went straight from XP to Windows 7, so I cannot comment on Vista.

At the same time....well....I have yet to discover compelling reasons to ditch Windows 7 and buy Windows 8.

Right now there is none.

But don't worry, M$ will soon realise this and bundle a bunch of crap into it that they wont put into prior versions of Windows. New version of DirectX maybe...

Whatever they do it will be gimmicky and cheap and designed specifically to lock people into their new diarrhoea-flavoured OS against their better judgement.

Just like Vista and x64
They could have improved the x64 XP kernel and made it more stable. But no. If you wanted reliable 64 bit you had to go to Vista....

More of the same inbound.

A week later, and I am still running Windows 8. I think it is beginning to grow on me. :run4hills:

I'm using it on my pc at work because I couldn't get it to work on my machine at home and I wasnt keen on the whole virtual machine idea(thanks anyway). I will admit its a bit of a learning curve but that's precisely why I wanted to load it so that I can get used to the interface.

I will reserve judgement for now since I haven't really tried anything of note on it but I have at least managed to get all my apps loaded into it so I can work as if on a win7 machine.

I like the new IE10 full screen browsing. Also it does seem to be a bit faster. One thing I will say is that I like the eye candy. It may be just that but I don't mind it. Once I've gotten used to the OS I'm sure navigating through it will become second nature. We will never look back! Now to buy my touchscreen monitor...

Reckoning it's about time you replaced that copy of Windows 8 Consumer Preview? Microsoft is right there with you. According to the outfit's Building Windows 8 Twitter account, the next major installment of Win8 is due out in "the first week of June," with the Windows 8 Release Preview to hit the intertubes at that time. Go ahead and take off the whole week in preparation -- we're sure you can think of a few DIY activities to bide your time in the event of a Friday release. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, this is just yet another step in the march to a hopeful October ship date for the final build of Windows 8.)

Meh, what is wrong with win 7 why are they now about to foist win 8 upon us?

A. To take your precious money.
B. To get you to use a horrible UI solely designed to make touch input easier.
C. So that your pc and phones interface looks equally retarded (if you were to buy one of those POSs)

Sounds about right, typical of monopolisesoft

This is like vista all over again. I will stick with 7 until M$ bring out a proper replacement

Par for the course. XP was an anomaly.

you do have a point there. XP was around for a long time, 95, 98, me, 2000 were not

MS dearly wishes it could push out half baked "upgrades" as Apple manages to do, but there's only one problem in their way and it's the fact that Windows users aren't mindless sheep like Apple's "community". That's another reason for the MetroUI, to dumb Windows down to the point where they can get the mindless hordes to use os. Once they manage this they'll start pushing the aforementioned "upgrades". Expect a 12 to 16 month release schedule.

Mark this post down kids, don't say I didn't tell you.

That explains that. MS would love to have loyal idiots...I mean fans like apple do so they can throw their rubbish at us and have us all jump for it.

The only thing keeping me from running Linux 24/7 is the lack of proper games. If stuff like Skyrim, BF3 etc could run on Linux natively I'd drop Windows in a heartbeat.

Also having Flight Sim X on Linux would help. Chances that MS would have FSX running on Linux is so slim it could be considered theoretical science.

There's a Linux thread for talking nonsense, please visit there and fester in anti-Windows vitriol with the other filthy Linux peasants

This thread is for the glorious Windows master race

Windows is so awesome even sub-human Linux fans HAVE to run it. I find your reluctant use of my favourite OS family quite titillating!

I find your titillating titillating, so why don't you put a titillating inside a titillating so you can titillate while you titillate?

It's an unfortunate situation, but use your overrated os I must.

As someone who has actually used and supported Linux in a business environment I have to say that you need to be able to operate on a different level to be power user. A year in and I was still very much a n00b - and losing what little knowledge I gleaned fast now that I'm back in an all Windows enviroment.

Installing Ubuntu with KDE/GNOME and WINE, and getting Age of Empires to run does not mean you know anything about Linux or make you qualified to take part in a serious Linux vs Windows debate.

Spend 10 minutes with someone RHCE certified. If you are able to hold up your end of a conversation with them, come back and tell me about all about Linux, otherwise meh.
