Games that never die

Good idea: Remember all those good old games you played long ago.

Bad idea: Playing them again because you felt like it.

That is usually the problem that occurs now days. You think back on that game you once enjoyed and as naive as you are you go and install them and then slip into madness as you pass by the title screen and into the game. But there are some games that never die. Apart from Sonic 3 & knuckles (which will forever be my all time favourite) I have decided to install diablo 1 again. That's right! Not Diablo 2 or lord of destruction but the plain old original game. And I found it to be ...good actually.

The graphics, very dated. The sound, meh its sound. The music, still fitting. The lack of run, well its a dungeon CRAWLER. The game mechanics, outdated but still the core of all dungeon crawlers.

The game is outdated by any standards but the core mechanics of the game remains stable and in place and is still the working just like the day it was released. Alot of features has made copies and sequels an easier ride like seperate gold slots, potion stacking, additional inventory packs, waypoint systems and such but after everything the game remains the same.

This is one game still playable even by todays standards.

I know how you feel. Every few years I re-install Dune 1 and enjoy it very much.

C&C for me... (obviously! :-) )

But I also have the entire SQ series, and about 1.5/2GB of old abandonware/DOS games. Some of them still rock, some of them suck more than a black hole.

Meh.

Installed and played SimCity 3000 and 4 Deluxe edition and I've been playing them on and off for about 2 months now, too bad there aren't city builders like SimCity 4 today. Cities XL just doesn't feel the same, different build style, zoning, that trading thing etc.

Now that I've heard that Carmageddon is being recreated I'm looking for an opportunity to "Fire 'em up!" :-)

Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Crystal Caves, Skyroads, Hocus Pocus. ;) These were legendary games and, of course, that's not even mentioning the obvious ones like Doom.

Bad move, bought Neverwinter Nights classic because of the nostalgia - let's just say games have come a long way!

Woohoo!!! GOG.com has got/is going to have Crusader: No Remorse for sale!!! Yeah!

My CDs of No Remorse and No Regret have been damaged since I got them: both games crash very near the end of the games. I'm looking forward to playing the updated, patched, working downloaded versions! WEC is going down!

I've got Carmageddon 2 working with a wrapper back when I was using vista, should still work on Win7.

I remember back in the day the Technical College in Middelburg had a computer lab where you could go and lan there over the weekends at R5 for an hour. We had massive Carmageddon 2 and Quake 2 sessions.

Have a bunch of old games. Busy building myself an old school gaming pc with an Amd 2800+ and a 6800 ultra agp. Will be dual booting win98 and xp.

My first fps was Half-Life. Man oh man, did I love that game. Also enjoyed Carmageddon and Nfs 3 Hot Pursuit. Can't wait to fire up some oldies.

Diablo 2 is by far the most enjoyable rpg I've ever played. There is a high resolution pack for it that updates the graphics for all of todays widescreens. Think it goes up to 1920 x 1200.

Have installed and played Deus Ex a number of times over the years.

Diablo II is currently installed on my PC and I play it occasionally.

The girlfriend and I fire up a match of UT every month or so.

Oldest game I have installed: Street Rod.

Have that in my Dosbox game folder. Has to be my favourite DOS game of all time. That and Street Rod 2. Played Street Rod on my 286 back in the day.

Mmmmmm, well I still enjoy the original DOOM, and Quake 1 even though I have to use my old pentium MMX rig to play it is very awesome. Half life is another one.

One other game that for me will never die is Battlefield Vietnam :D
