I found my line speed is syncing at 1024kbps instead of 512kbps (NOT that I am complaining...) Has anyone else "suffered" this :D

Telkom looks set to upgrade their 512Kbps ADSL subscribers to 1Mbps in the coming weeks. Telkom would only confirm that the upgrades are indeed on the table, but industry players have confirmed that they expect this upgrade soon.

It is also predicted that Telkom will keep the price of their planned 1Mbps ADSL service the same as their DSL512 pricing of R326 per month.

Nice... Now, will the ISPs play ball? I.e. will they uprate the 512 offerings to match the new line speeds?

I'm guessing NO :x

Most capped offerings already work at whatever your line speed is. It's generally the uncapped offerings that are line speed specific.

Capped offerings are generally not throttled by the ISP, so the 512 kbps users will notice the difference.

Uncapped offerings generally ARE throttled by the ISP, and one would likely have to upgrade to a higher speed package (the costs to the ISP of provisioning bandwidth have not changed). As far as I know, only MWEB currently has a home quality 1 Mbps offering, although several ISPs offer a business grade uncapped 1 Mbps package.

It's generally the uncapped offerings I'm referring to

Ok, uhm, what are the differences between home and business grade? :?

The business grade uncapped products generally have lower contention than those aimed at the home market, which translates into a higher average throughput and less throttling/shaping. Because of this, they're much more expensive. ;)

My 384 line has been downloading at 43kbps average lately. I take it our speeds also increased?

I wasn't aware of a 384k line upgrade, but it's entirely possible. What does your router say it's syncing at?

I need a babblefish to understand that. How do check? how do see syncing?

:? Log in to your router. on the 1st page usually, it will tel you connected/disconnected, and if connected, something along the lines of 384/128 or 1024/512, or whatever, depending on your line speed. 1st value is your download speed, second is upload, in kbps.

Otherwise go find it under status or something.

Just look at your router directly in the blinking lights and ask in your most sultry voice, "What are you syncing at?"

What router do you have? It'll be slightly different on different routers, but there should be some option once you've logged into the router to see the stats of your DSL connection.

On our router here at the office (Linksys WAG200G) it's under "Status" > "DSL Connection."
DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: G.dmt
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 4096 kbps
Upstream Rate: 512 kbps

Downstream Margin: 8 db
Upstream Margin: 12 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 26 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 7 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 5 db
Upstream Transmit Power: -6 db

Uhg, still at 384, Although I'm still getting 40+ download speeds. Which has never happened before. We barely even got the full 38 speed ever.
