My dad bought a Samsung Blue ray player based on it's price (R1000) and we could and did unlock it to be region free. I'll give you details if you want. I pushed for a PS3 because I wanted the PS3 and GT5 and his words were 'I'll never see the PS3 again'.

The PS3 is more versatile but at 3 times the price it should be.

and we could and did unlock it to be region free
that would probably be region free for DVD only - Blu-ray has only three regions and most discs are not coded for them currently (at least 90% of the discs will play in any region) but to make a player region free for Blu-ray will require hardware changes so you may mistakenly think that yours is region free but that will only apply for the 8 dvd regions

as an example the Oppo BDP 95 costs around R12k and to make it region free you have to replace a daughter board in the player to a modded version and that costs around R5k on its own - so yep Blu-ray region free is not as easy as you may think

the only other method i would know of is to backup the blu-ray using a blu-ray writer where you remove the AACs and region coding as well the BD+ protection and write the disc to a blank - that would be cheaper cos right now blu-ray burners are getting under R1k - and blank discs are around R25 for a 25 gig single layer disc and around R80 for a dual layer 50 gig disc

Some BRD are not region locked if I am not mistaken. I know the ps3 games arent region locked at all so it is easy to get titles you wouldnt be able to get from europe ect (looking at importing Catherine :P ) but I havent tried any movies yet.
