Eastern Cape Police on Tuesday said they could not dismiss out of hand reports that a shape-shifting creature has been terrorising residents of Steytlerville.
Police said locals have reported a number of sightings of a man who reportedly changes into various animals.
The so-called monster started appearing in the Karoo town towards the end of March.
Police spokesperson Zandisile Nelani said a group of locals first described the creature after they spotted it outside a tavern one evening.
Nelani said no drugs or alcohol were involved in the sightings.
“There were no drugs involved. This thing, if you are five people on the street you won’t see it. If you are one, you can see that. And if he is coming on the street and he saw you, he will come to you," Nelani said.
I was in Steytlerville from the 22nd till the 24th of April, we were somewhere between Gariep and Graaff-Reinett when we heard on the radio

Empangeni - A northern KwaZulu-Natal businesswoman, her two sons and another woman were found hanged outside the front door of their third floor Empangeni flat on Saturday morning.
The bodies were found when a neighbour, living on the same floor, was leaving for work.
“It was about 06:45 when I found the bodies. I walked out my door and saw something hanging and without realising they were bodies, walked up to them.
“The shock still hasn’t set in,” said the neighbour, who asked not be named.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the building, on the corner of Union and Smith streets, with the hanging bodies being visible from the road until the police cordoned off the area and put up a screen.
Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said the police are investigating four counts of murder.
“There is a suspicion of foul play. The bodies will need to be inspected so that we can ascertain the time and cause of death,” said Mdlalose.
He said there were no signs that robbery could be a motive.
The deceased, the mother Zandile Zungu,46, her sons Mthokozisi, 24 and 19-year-old Zama, as well as a friend or relative, Soneli Mtshali, 32, all ran a catering business next to the block of flats.
With one flat between the neighbour and the Zungu family, the neighbour said neither he nor his wife heard any form of a struggle.
“There is a tavern across the road and on a Friday night it is exceptionally noisy. They were good, pleasant people.
"Every Tuesday, except this past Tuesday, they held a church meeting in their flat,” said the neighbour.
The sons, Mthokozisi, a part-time lifeguard, and Zama, who finished high school in 2010, were both studying.
uMhlathuze Municipality chief sport and recreation officer Shakir Hiraman, said Mthokozisi was “a good, decent person”.
“He had been working as a lifeguard for us during the busy seasons for the last three years.
“He was a good lifeguard and competent in the pool and ocean,” said Hiraman.

It was? In that case, I enforce my dubiousness.
I'll make it one better, it was Whackhead who quoted it, therefore it must be true
Now, just to enforce the point, on the way to work this morning I heard Simpson reporting a story about a woman claiming that she fell pregnant from watching a 3D porno film and that her husband believed her.
And, of course . . .
“A week ago we published an article about the woman who claimed to get pregnant after watching a porn movie 3d. The article was fake and we used the photo that we found on the Internet. Unfortunatelly, the article spread around the world because some sites thought that it was real. That was not our intention. Sensacionalista is a small site from Brazil. We never thought that this could happen. That’s why we are asking this family to accept our sincere apology. That woman and her baby in the photo had nothing to do with this article. They are just a normal family trying to live they’re own lives. We apologize for wrongfully taking their photo and putting it in our article. Please, not to publish this article again and next time check what you read before you write. This site is a humor site. Nothing here is real.”
"One man painted a red X across Zuma's face and the second covered the painting with black paint," a gallery spokesman said. . . .
Iman Rappetti, eNews channel anchor, was in the Goodman Gallery in Rosebank, close to the "The Spear" when a man took out a pot of paint and marked an X in the genital area of the portrait.
I think EWN captured the full explanation a little better:
Caught on an eNews Channel camera, the first man took a small can of red paint and slowly marked two large 'X' symbols over the genitals and the face with a paintbrush.

, I still think that the artist should be nominated for a win
Ok, I see where you're coming from with this. In my opinion, they probably meant it is likely that either one of the two mentioned would be first batsman, instead of any one of the other 12.
As opposed to them likely playing (at all).
Perhaps not the most sterling report on sterling reporting...

These reports usually report the likely starting eleven, not the batting lineup.
You are being ridiculously pedantic about this. It's the standard format that they use across the board:
New Zealand: (likely) 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt & wk), 4 James Franklin, 5 Colin Munro, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Nathan McCullum, 8 Jimmy Neesham, 9 Doug Bracewell, 10 Ronnie Hira, 11 Mitchell McClenaghan/Trent Boult
Would you be happy if they omitted the (likely) from the South African team breakdown? You should write them a strongly worded letter to ensure that they take cognisance of your apparent dismay.

I see. But isn't it usually reported in order? Just curious.

Often. Though in this instance I think the point was that either Levi or Ontong would play, not necessarily open the batting. I reckon Ontong was always going to slot in the middle order.
