Ah, the back routes are going to be a nightmare now =(
In time the municipalities will start doing so much updgrades in the urban areas with the roads that they will eventually start to look like highways themselves(20+ years I say). It will justcreat another cycle and it's all going to end up messed up.

does sound horrible. i live in CT. so for now this won't affect me. hope they don't do this here or its going to suck to go anywhere.

To my understanding, SANRAL does not control the N1 and N2 between the city centre and the respective interchanges with the R300 - they do want to set up tolls on the stretches of road that they do control though. I understand their point for the Huguenot Tunnel (project ongoing to complete the northern bore, and tunnel maintenance can't come that cheap) and the proposed Somerset West bypass, but fail to see the point of tolling existing infrastructure.

Damn If I take the highway every day it will work me out more than my petrol in toll gates. Ouch. Going to cost me R 78.00 per day.
Say 20 working days in a month. That would give me around.... R 1 560.00. My petrol costs me R 1 200.00 a month and I do more than just drive to work and back. This is ridiculous.

Have you factored in the discounts applicable to using an e-tag and being a regular user?

Well I am not planning to use the highway in any case. I am not paying 70% tax on fuel just so that I can be ripped off even more by paying tolls.

Mind doing the calculation anyway so that we can compare the two?

I'm also busy plotting alternative routes for the times I need to use the GFIP network.

Ok ok.. it is 30.5% of our fuel price is tax... Which is meant to be applied to road maintenance. If our government can't work with the money it is not my responsibility to give them more money which they can stuff into their own pockets to further enrich themselves and oppress the poor.

With a tag it will work me out around R 1 170.00 each month. Which would still double my traveling costs.

Can't disagree with that. At least they're using the money to keep our railways going. Or doesn't the gravy train need tracks?

But seriously. It'd be interesting to see what 'benefit' the discount will have for a regular user.

Problem is they consider the time I am driving at to be peak time... Although I can't see how that can be. The roads at 05h00 in the morning is not busy at all. If I were to leave my house at 08h00 I would get a 5% discount... woopy doo da dae...

What is the use of traveling nicely on the highway only to hit a wall of congestion once you have to get off?
