WhatsApp for Iphone

Hi Guys
Wondering if you could help.
I have an Iphone 3GS and i installed the WhatsApp application for. It's a free messenger.
but every time i run the app i get the error message:
"Network Required
WhatsApp requires an active internet connection to go through the setup process. edge, 3g and WI-FI are supported"
I don't have WI-FI close by but I've verified that 3G and cellular data is on. I even tested with the Safari browser, Facebook and Twitter apps and they work fine.
Anyone know what else i could be missing.
