problems with Sendmail and exchange 2007

I have a program that runs on a linux server that needs to send out emails.
i've configured sendmail to use our exchange 2007 server as a smart host and also configured sendmail to masq the sending domain to another domain.
i can send emails from the command line sometimes but when the application is tries to send i get the following errors:
note: impcptnag1.xxxxxxxx.co.za is the linux server not the exchange server
can anyone please help me with this?
