The LFA is probably the exception(still not as exciting as its European rivals) but the rest of the range are boring on the outside and even more so on the inside

The fact that your 13yo merc is still in such good condition speaks more to your (and your family's) view of looking after your possessions than anything else.
True, even Alfa's dont spend all day breaking down anymore. But yep people who dont even know where the engine is in their car are quick to point out that expensive cars fall apart :?

Well yes but also before 2000 Mercedes were like tanks. They were built to last for a 1000 years, there are still many W124 and W123 series cars around, many of which are unfortunately owned by the sort who dont look after anything but they still continue to function.

Stig, to be brutally honest, European supercars don't really wow me so much. I'd much rather have a muscle car, or something I built up myself, a tuner car, if you will.

Not that I have the money or knowledge/skills to really do it myself, but the desire is there :P

Muscle cars, yes. An AMG is pretty much a German muscle car, fast in a straight line, makes a big noise, has a huge engine but cant go round corners without destroying the tires.....and fun

But yes a custom muscle car would be nice, as you know there are no others like it and will be just the way you want it

Really? You would like to own a W123 200D? A car slower than geology?

I should have said one example of each car they ever made.

But I love the W123 series, not the diesel but mostly because I really don't like diesel cars. yes they do use less fuel then a similarly sized petrol engine but is so dirty and maintenance costs are higher once they get older.....and there is more to go wrong, cough turbo cough
