Today I got Internet for my PC. I connected and thought that it would automatically download updates while I eat. When I came back, SPYWARE arrived and infected my PC. My PC was kind of old. I have Windows XP 32-bit version. Should I reinstall everything. Do a clean sweep?

Uhm.......... To get spyware, YOU need to install dodgy programs. It doesn't just appear...

I did try and update my very old AVG 9. Is this the problem?

No AVG is legit. You have installed something else like a Driver update utility or zombie Brittany stripper app.

Download and install Spybot, update and run that. Then download NOD32 AV and see what that picks up (It's a trial that will pick up a lot but I highly recommend you buy the full version instead of AVG)

AVG does viruses. Not spyware.

I used to get spyware from just surfing. Is that possible?

i'd opt for a combination of SUPERAntiSpyware and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware....

i suspect the OP is an IE user... :/

@Siemens: drive-by infections are entirely possible, but they tend to focus on shareware/torrent/pr0n sites... every so often one of the adserver tjops will expose one of the main stream sites but that happens very rarely....
