Online game issues

Hi all,

My line can connect to websites local and international.
I can Join/Host local games (war3, quakelive)
I cannot Join/Host international games (HoN, Sc2)
The game starts up and connects to the main menue, the username and password goes through fine. But as soon as I try and Join/host a game, it will time out. This will also happen in the chat channels.

I have tried port forwarding, and resetting my DSL both on my side and telkoms side.

Please if anyone has an idea of whats going on, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What is your line speed?

i) are you running a firewall?
ii) what line are you running? - stu'd
iii) who is the line provisioned by?
iv) connecting cabled or wireless?
v) have you run tests on the line, verifying your sync speed/ping?
vi) what OS are you running? (not that this should matter)
vii) have you tested at different times?

let's start there...

you should be aware that some games have minimum latency rules and our international ping is borderline acceptable at best...

i) are you running a firewall? yes windows, but all games are allowed (and it worked before with firewall on)
ii) what line are you running? 10mb
iii) who is the line provisioned by? Line: Telkom, ISP: Axxess, Mweb
iv) connecting cabled or wireless? Cable
v) have you run tests on the line, verifying your sync speed/ping? 10-16db line attenuation, and 9 ping to http://www.google.co.za
vi) what OS are you running? (not that this should matter) Windows 7
vii) have you tested at different times? Yes afternoon and mornings.

Hope this helps.

Droof wrote:i) it worked before with firewall on - windows firewall is crud... for the sake of troubleshooting, kill it then bring it back up after..
ii) 10mb - shaped? one of those uncapped offerings?
iii) -
iv) -
v) 10-16db line attenuation, and 9 ping to http://www.google.co.za - as local isn't the hiccup, let's test international - preferably somewhere in the states or UK...
vi) Windows 7 - have you fiddled with QoS/IPv6 or anything else in the network stack or NIC settings?
vii) Yes afternoon and mornings. - for completeness, try get a mid-week test between 8am and 4pm - if there's contention, it will happen when everyone's home...

what AV are you running and does it perform packet inspection?

Any chance you can purchase some prepaid (non-uncapped) bandwidth to test it on. Those uncapped accounts are pretty crud for gaming.

Problem found....

Axxess "JustSurf" ADSL package blocks online gaming ports. No warning on their site about this!

Just wrote them a very angry letter :)

Thanks for the help anyways, much appreciated.

 read the name of the package. It sais JustSurf meaning Just Surf as in just for surfing not for anything else. So http and smtp traffic only.
