paying for anti virus is like paying the car-guard in the parkinglot
yes-u think he's looking after your car - but when you get to it + it has a ding/scratch
is he gonna pay to get it fixed? i dont think so...
Only problem is : if no-one paid him - he wouldnt be there + then your car would get banged up/stolen all the time.

Same with AV...
Do u think paying for it is some kind of garuantee?
Are avast /avira / nod32 /whoever gonna help you recover your data /movies etc after a virus has wrecked ur PC and u haVE to re-install windows? (NO-UR PROBABLY GONNA HAVE TO RELY ON FRIENDS TO HELP YOU THERE...)

By all means - go for paid AV ,some1 has to keep these companies going ,we'd all be screwed without them.(but dont think that thats the end of virus problems for u)

IMO : avast pro /kaspersky /nod32 (they all decent)
IMO : unpaid - use a combo (my fav is avast + avira + no it hardly affects performance + no they dont cause any funny things-like bluescreen /conflicts etc...)

The real weapon against viruses is u - most infections occur because we are hasty / ignorant / careless.Educate ur self ...your safety is your concern-no one elses...
Somewere else in these forums is a thread : Practising safe hex - read it - u may learn of some mistakes u have made in the past.
(OH YES....if u have a friend who is into virus-writing : KILL HIM!!)plain + simple...

REGARDS

The impact anti virus software has on performance these days are minimal. To add to that Avast has a neat silent gaming mode(which isn't even neccesary since my performance doesn't get affected.

SO I would wholeheartedly recommend Avast.

I don't think that's entirely AVG.

I'm using Eset Nod32 or rather their Internet Security suite at home. I like it a lot.
At work I'm using MSE and I have to say it has kept my laptop free from a lot of evil. Our work network is brimming with nasties. I think I would be using MSE at home as well if I had not received Esets flagship free of charge..

Avast still wont let SC2 update... I have to turn it off whenever a new patch is released.

Other than that one niggle it's great.

Does that mean it's turning into AVG?

It means that the Avast devs are not in a hurry to correct the macro/heuristic that interprets SC2 updating itself as an attack.
As far as I know that's the only game that Avast does this with, and it might just be that Blizzard have coded the updater to behave in a way that some actual malware does...

It would be nice if Avast would let us know - I sent them a mail about it 2 months ago which they have yet to acknowledge

I have found that for the uninterested user, Security Essentials is solid. It doesn't bother you with nonsense, and has a very light impact on system performance. On the other hand, scan times are slow, and detections are down a bit from other brands like Comodo.

I'd recommend AVG, or Comodo for the slightly interested, and MSE for the net plodders who couldn't be bothered.

Recommending products like that is the quickest way to ruin any credibility you may have amongst the users here and show just how little you actually know about computers. AVG, as rustypup & a few others have so eloquently put it, is the worst of the worst when it comes to Antivirus products. And in my own experience Avast doesn't fall far behind it. The reason I have a gripe with Avast is because a fully up-to-date copy of it could not prevent an ancient USB autorun worm from infecting my PC. So I bought a Kasperksy 3 user pack because it has (from my own experiences) the strongest disinfection techniques of any antivirus I have ever used, period. I don't even have to run other apps to scan for spyware as those programs never pick up anything on my PC anyway, the gaming mode is also a big plus.

If you insist on sticking with free, then go for MSE or Antivir. The only thing that may annoy you with the free version of Antivir is that it displays an ad during updates promoting it's premium product, but on the bright side their free package offers rock solid detection that's as good as any premium product out there.

Posting an opinion contrary to Xiphan's is the quickest way to receive a lengthy diatribe from him about how little you actually know about computers. He will be sure to pander to the usual forum malcontents like rustypup for support :P

Pretty nasty sentiments, and then you go and agree with me?

I was just saying some people don't care for antiviruses, and don't want to be bothered by them, as long as they are kept safe. Others like to tweak and like to have a bit more control of their antiviruses.

As I have found all the products I've mentioned to be capable antiviruses (considering they are free), I have no problem with the way I recommended them.

I have also yet to find a free antivirus that protects from all known forms of viruses. Buy the top of the line antivirus, and stick in some flashdrives from any given university, and you'll have some nasty infections. I've had to use Combofix many a time to remove infections that some very expensive security solutions couldn't remove. Basically it comes down to user practice though. These programs can only protect you so much.

Sorry, had to put my jeanpants on for that to make sense.

Most if not all anti-virus apps have mail scanning software that does this

Is that a guess or a fact? Because MSE and AvastFree don't do it.

Also, I don't understand your jeanpant comment. Maybe I need one hand full of curried rice to get it?

Are you a troll or a warlock?

Avast has a real-time mail shield that scans all incoming (and outgoing) attachments.

Thank you, actually said something useful for a change

p.s.

Troll is term for a person who, through willful action, attempts to disrupt a community or garner attention and controversy through provocative messages. That sounds very much like you, Jamin.

jamin's a troll? Seriously?

Dagnabbit, I'd better go warn the other mods and admins. Why have we never spotted this before?
