my first 3d rendering in photoshop cs5

hey guys,
so the new photoshop has some amazing features, but in my opinion the biggest of these are 3d rendering, here's an example:
Image

note that the plane and tankdog was imported from 3dsmax, the type and blocks were created in photoshop. all the final rendering, lighting and textures was done in ps though.

so... opinions?

why would anyone, outside of marketing, attempt to use farcebook as an image hosting site?

Nice, very nice! dare i ask.... how many layers?

probably about 30 layers in the end. about 50 hours worth of rendering, me starting to wonder if 8gb of ram and one 9600gt is really "enough".
it ended up as a 5gb psd file...
the background is a photo of zululand and the sky free state.
its resolution is 300dpi, a3 width, so its quite big. was thinking of doing a canvas print of it.

The robotech-lego hybrid thingy floating in the center is ruining it for me. The slutty pink is also out of place.

'the robotech-lego hybrid thingy' is put in there to test photoshops rendering(which was the point of this work) its fairly intricate and i wanted to see how ps handles it. thus, its there.

the "slutty pink lettering" is slutty pink because I like magenta, and its the perfect colour to communicate "creative", it is also one of the four process colours. and connects with the magenta used as highlights in the models' texture.

this work was not done for prettiness' sake, but as a test of the new features of ps cs5.

thank you for you constructive criticism, always appreciated.

I can't wait to see your work...

@ madmind, I've been busy with it on and off for about 3 weeks, some of the days my pc just stood there without being touched for whole days at a time while it rendered.
ps takes damn long to render, and its modelling is fairly limited, but it was fun to see how far it can be pushed. its easier to use than most 3d packages though.

i hate to tell you this, but it's communicating the exact opposite... given the prominent banner, i'd have gone for a metallic red or at least something far less... abrasive...

also, does PS produce the shadows?... they look... wrong....

and cyan or yellow works better communicating creative?
no, ps only generates shadows on the models.
question: is today official flame reyals day?

edit
I was told to play nice. /sigh

Just looking at the 3D capabilities it looks nice... even though I do not agree with the content you chose to demonstrate it.

 this is not a flame... this is a "i can't believe he posted it and asked for opinions on a public forum, then gets defensive when he gets precisely that"

for future reference, it's always flame reyals day :P

well, i'm sorry if I offended your eyes,
and, considering the "software can do better", why don't you show me?

Bwahahahahahaha I really would not take them seriously - and as you, I would not ask their opinions again  Next time make a thread and call it NOT for Rusty or Sojourn ;-)

Just teasing - next time be specific about what you want crit on.

So reyals, what is your opinion (that word again!) on Maya?

 @Sturat: oi, he was offering to get everyone laid... why are you closing him down?.. fascist!

also:
reyals wrote:ps only generates shadows on the models
this means its a thoroughly pointless exercise in futility... far better to generate textures in PS and use them in 3d max/strata/blender/etc.... :/

haven't worked on it yet, i've only done a bit on 3dsmax and carrara, my experience with 3d modeling is just experimentation, still learning.
i mainly focus identity design and branding. so 3d takes back seat.

exactly, ps' 3d is a nice bell/whistle(It should be better in cs6), but it will obviously be better to use something created specifically for 3d.

its modeling capabilities are also very limited, as stated, the plane/robodog was imported from 3dsmax then textured and rendered. its good for text and that kind of thing.

then you need to check out: they're pretty easy to get into... the blender, maya and 3ds max products offer a great deal more, but don't lend themselves to toe-dippers...

<edit> also, anima8tor... impressive little package...

cool, thanks, will check it out. I'm busy with 3ds max right now, working on a case mod design. the only way to learn(for me at least) is doing, and so far so good. what do you spec in, rustypup?
