I think you have made your self clear enough :-).

But the software, is it TCP or UDP based. Cus if you know which ports you can then just NAT it to the PLC device via your Firewall, same plce where RDP and Teamviewer rules are set
Then use the external IP address of your Firewall router , or DYNDNS address.

But if you want to use VPN, I can only help when it comes to OpenVPN, I dont know much about other VPN systems.

What PLC are you using? Also, what software?

Allan Bradley and Omron PLCs are pretty easy to get to work using a VPN. I used TheGreenBow VPN software to achieve this - was pretty easy.

Do a search on this forum and you'll find a few threads by me on this exact thing.
Siemens PLCs were a little more tricky, but still fairly easily done.

The easiest would be to install VPN software on the PC at the client, which relays your external communication to the PLC. Then, on the PLC, set the gateway to be your Client PCs IP, same with DNS.

Pretty easy setup actually.

What software?

We use VPN here and we do not have any issues with connecting to a PLC or any other networked device.

Basically, VPN puts your laptop of desktop on the network as if it were a machine in the plant.
If you do not have VPN, maybe try something like Hamachi that creates a VPN between the work pc and your laptop.

I would not just forward ports to the PLC. This is the Internet! Giving the whole world access to an industrial controller running machines, conveyors etc is insane. I would not even run the remote desktop like that.

IMO you need some type of VPN setup. The little experience I have with OpenVPN so far has been good.

The way I solved this was to purchase a router for the PLC to comm through.

So you have plc - router =/=/=/=/=/internet/=/=/=/=/ -vpn software - laptop

TheGreenBow is pretty easy to get working. From a quality prespective, i would recommend Westermo MRD-310 routers - they are 3G based and do this type of thing easily. They can be gotten from Throughput Technologies or Schneider Electric.
