Morning All,

So we are having some lovely fun with our server's mysteriously shutting down for a "ambient temperature protection" error. Now the server room is kept at a very cool 18-20'C so to say I am perplexed is a understatement.

What I need is a program that monitors the temp and either A: Emails the alert through to the I.T. group or B: Makes a log file whenever it reaches critical temps then we can setup a system to monitor for that.

So any ideas?

What brand servers are you running?

If it's HP, then Insight Manager will do the trick for you.

I noticed Coretemp has a logging feature but it logs everything, which is impractical. Speedfan has a email facility however the differences between Speedfan and Coretemp are +- 10'C so I am not sure who to trust...

I would not waste my time with those utilities on a server. Insight Manager was designed to query the agents running on the client servers and then log that is a central database. Much easier and you could manage your whole server farm from within that one page.

You can setup mail notifications and even setup limits on the servers so that when that limit gets reached, Insight manager will then send you a mail. Take it one step further and implement a 3rd party sms solution and then you can get notifications wherever you are.

What HP servers?

If it's an ML or DL range then look for a lot of hpqilo2 alerts in Windows Event viewer.
If you see a lot of alerts for duplicate temperature sensors and other stuff then you may have to do a firmware update on the server.

We have some DL380 G5's that were rebooting due to temperature alerts, but they were not actually overheating. The iLO2 update in the version 9.0 firmware bundle sorted our problem out...

@ rusty Unfortunately we need a reliable source not someone that will nod off to sleep and then sell the systems on the slide and replace them with cardboard cutouts .

Okay resurrection time...

So this project was left alone as I got started and the server that it was installed on was nuked...

So I have now installed the latest version of Insight Manager and have set the email side up now however I need to deploy agents to monitor the servers. How do I go about doing this? I am trying (IS is shaping me to hell and gone) to download the latest PSP to install on the servers,is this the correct path to take? Scratch that just read a website that says copy the PSP to the repository folder and install it from the console, correct? Also what is the "HP Version Control Agent" for?

Answer to part 1 is correct.

Answer to part 2 on what the version control agent is: It's the agent on the machine that keeps track of the versions of installed HP software and firmware on the server. Nice to have, because you can quickly see what servers need a firmware of software update.
