1983 Giulietta 2L Ti => 1983 Giulietta Turbo Autodelta

Post by RuadRauFlessa »

Hi Guys,

Since I recently had a bit of an issue with my Giulietta 2L Ti, which coincidentally does not have a 2L engine but a 1.8L, I have decided to convert it into a Giulietta Turbo Autodelta replica. Now my idea regarding this project is to have a car for shows. Meaning it has to be spot on the same as the original. So I have to change stuff like the wheel hubs which currently only has 4 bolts into a wheel hub which has 5 bolts. Also stuff like the suspension I will rip out and replace with that of a GTV6.

Wikipedia
My Current Car:
My current Giulietta's engine has some serious problems which is fine as I need to replace it for the rebuild in any case. Then I have a problem regarding the gearbox and clutch sub assembly which I will need to do a complete recon on. I will be moving the car to a friend of mine who will be doing the bodywork and paint job which will also be the location at which I will be working on the car as he has all the tools I will need.
Image

What it will become:
Image
Some basic stats around the Autodelta: http://www.ultimatespecs.com/?option=4& ... 34&car=451

So this is my kicker to the project. As time goes on I will post soem info I find on both the cars over here for a comparison. (I will keep this post updated as I go along as it would be nice to have all of the technical info on the same post)

Dude, you are a brave man indeed. I have done a few engine swaps in my time and it is never easy, especially with something as rare in SA as the car you have chosen. Will you be importing the spares?

Regarding spares I luckily have a contact. A guy named Kevin at AK Components in JHB. The cater specially for enthusiasts. One nice thing about the rebuild is that the Autodelta uses different parts from different Alfa models. So all the parts are obtainable through AK Components. There are a couple of things I will need to get specially manufactured like head gaskets as I need thicker ones to compensate for compression.

nice project raud! Best of luck with it!

what are you going to do with the old engine?

If you're going to keep it, why not strip it down to just the block, clean it up and put a sheet of glass on it to turn it into a coffee table?

Damn nice idea Monty... my cousin will be taking it off my hands though. He needs some spare parts for his Giulietta. If though after opening the engine we find that it is completely shot, which I doubt as we noticed the problem fairly early on, then I will take your suggestion to heart.

You got that idea from Top Gear. so now I want that engine block for my coffee table.

Off topic: i really want the top gear couch though.

I want the table and then i would like a set of brake disc drink coasters. Sadly the moment a member of the opposite sex moves in you know that the table and the coasters will be tossed. (not by our choice)

Both the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Turbo Delta and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Autodelta has turbos. And they are not the same thing. The Turbo Delta was manufactured and produced by Alfa themselves while the Autodelta was produced by their sister company Autodelta which handled their racing production. So actually I named the thread incorrectly. It should be 1983 Giulietta Autodelta.

It has a 2L with 2 x Dell'Orto DHLA 40H horizontal double barrel carburettors and yes it has an Avio Turbo pushing at 128kW of a car design that is 27 years old.

BTW here is a pic of the engine compartment... well of what it should have..

Sorry dude I would love to start getting my hands dirty but currently I am fishing for information. I don't want to buy something and replace something and then only find out later on that what I got was not what it was produced with. As I want to create a show piece I want to be 100% certain that I do it right the first time. I did however get some contact details of Alfa's history department where apparently I could potentially get all the info I may ever need. I just have to find the time to actually draft a couple of questions to them, and then find someone to translate it to Italian as my Italian is a tad rusty at the moment.

Thanks, my concern was just that I thought you might be converting from a non turbo'd to turbo engine. But if they are both running turbo's, that fine and my concerns aren't valid. :)

Well you see the thing is...and it will be my biggest expense...I need to replace the current engine altogether as the current engine is a 1.8l whereas the one I need is 2.0l. Oh yeah and I will need to get it's compression ratio down to about 6.7-7:1 else the turbo will cause havoc. If you have any pointers as to what I need to check before slapping a turbo on a non turbo engine please let me know. I don't want to make expensive, sloppy or unforeseen mistakes.

That question is too general m8. Your best best would be to troll the interwebs and look for people that have done a turbo conversion on the specific motor you are looking to convert.

Just found an interesting bit of news. Apparently the last couple of Autodelta's to roll off the floor didn't have Dellorto Carbs but had Marelli Electronic Fuel Injection....

Well thanks Mr. Stig... I can't wait to actually get this thing rolling. Currently I am in a bit of a pinch money wise so I can't really get any of the parts and things I require. I'll give you the first ride once it is finished. How does that sound.

Awesome thanks, the parts must be expensive. I need to save for new shocks on my car (1999 C180 classic with 279 654km's) still has the originals on it.

Ouch... ye time to replace those shocks.

Cost of the parts aren't that bad but if you are already living on an overdraft it just does not help.

Well it is a Merc and the parts do last very long....the shocks are not dead yet they just make a noise whenever you go over a bump, but other than that it is awesome and the stock stereo (deker 6 speaker surround Dolby NR certified) sounds great and even today is better than most new cars stereo's. Merc really knew how to make a car back then.
