In that case, IMO buy a VW.
Not necessarily a new one. And invest the rest.

Jamin has the right on the Vivo. I won't buy it in any case. It gets a lousy review and it looks like something the cat dragged in while drunk out of it's mind.GreyWolf wrote:I think that would be closer to 170k. That's just weird, a friend of mine went to look at them recently and they quoted her about 150k for the full spec 1.4. anyhoo. I would still get a second hand e46. you can get a 330i for that money. check it:jamin_za wrote:Polo Vivo 1.6 Trendline with metallic paint, aircon and MP3 = R154 620 excl bolt-on motor plan

yeah you can get that second hand car - but two weeks later you will realize you need to spend around R10k to get the brakes sorted then you will probably need to spend R5k to get the aircon regassed and then probably a month later the shocks will give up and a month after that you will need new tyres ....... and as soon as you take delivery of the car - every wheel will probably be buckled and you will need a new set (probably going to cost around R25k for a set of wheels and tyres from BMW if you want the stock OEM stuff) - then the seats are probably tattered and need to be recovered in leather - look at around R8k for this if done aftermarket - around R12k if you want the factory stuff ...... the list will go on - and thats still considering that the engine is soundGreyWolf wrote:That's just weird, a friend of mine went to look at them recently and they quoted her about 150k for the full spec 1.4. anyhoo. ive been down the road of buying second hand cars - to be honest there is no way in hell i would suggest it even to my worst enemies - i would rather get a car lower down on features and functionality and not bother about style as long as the vehicle i get is brand new ..... even though you can get a lemon brand new too but the odds are way lower on that if you do get the new car and generally if its serious the warranty would cover the repair
all the above was considering that the 330i you pointed to was 6 years old - also resale value on Beemers is atrocious - looking at the model you pointed to as an example - by the time you realized it was a lemon and wanted to get rid of it 6 months down the line you would lose R50k instantly

I have also been down the road of second hand cars, and to be honest i have not had issues, and neither have my mates. RX8, Lumina SS, Golf IV GTi, Xtrail, all still running fine, all bought second hand.naughty wrote:yeah you can get that second hand car - but two weeks later you will realize you need to spend around R10k to get the brakes sorted then you will probably need to spend R5k to get the aircon regassed and then probably a month later the shocks will give up and a month after that you will need new tyres ....... and as soon as you take delivery of the car - every wheel will probably be buckled and you will need a new set (probably going to cost around R25k for a set of wheels and tyres from BMW if you want the stock OEM stuff) - then the seats are probably tattered and need to be recovered in leather - look at around R8k for this if done aftermarket - around R12k if you want the factory stuff ...... the list will go on - and thats still considering that the engine is sound

This is not the only 330i for sale for that price, so you have your choice of cars, and you don't have to take the one with the tattered seats. And you can test drive it before you buy it.

Re: What would you buy for R150 000
Hmmm Kay so I just applied and got approved for the Polo Vivo.... 1.4 with all the bells and whistles. Depressing thing is that over the 72 month period I will be paying R116 000 more for the car than the starting price. Ye you guessed it. A R140 000 turns into R256 320. Really depressing.
