It's 'control' and 'cruise'.

I refuse to buy 2nd hand, with the exception of maybe knowing the owner personally. Many cars still look fine but their owners drive them pretty damn hard. Sure, you can get a bargain at times, but if you encounter some bad luck then you're stuck with it.

I'd choose a less fancy, but brand new car over a 2nd hand one with more features any day.

But if you know what to look out for(always take a test drive) then 2nd hand can be better, you can get a much better car for a lot less money and cars like merc's(the normal one's not the AMG's) are not usually driven that hard and are pretty well looked after.

I'm with Bladerunner. Did a test drive in a car which was almost spotless. No rattles, no leakages, smooth transmission, only to have the thing standing after about 2000km after it was bought. If you buy 2nd hand anything can and will probably happen. If you buy new the same is true but at least you have the manufacturer's guarantee and probably a service plan to boot. Hence the reason I went for the Vivo with all of the extras.

Woman a work baught a new Citroen C2... after a service at 50k, the gear lever came off in her hand on the highway. She took it back to have it re-serviced. Now whenever she is in 1st the car makes a horrible grinding noise. New cars also come with horror stories.

Don't buy French or Korean, that's the ticket.

I was looking at the Renault Sandero myself and it looked extremely good on paper. Then after a while I thought: "But it's French...", and then I decided against it.

Yep, I have to agree with the sentiment that French = Fail.

Alpha's are the exception to the rule, but even then, you are crazy to buy one second hand...

Here in Australia anything that comes from the orient is dirt cheap. Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Subaru, Honda etc they cost nothing to buy and maintain.
However if I was still in SA I'd ditto the Hyundai remarks... doesn't make sense to own them there.

Oh jamin_za.... The only way to buy an Alfa Romeo is second hand as they depreciate as fast as they accelerate. You can pick up a cheap one in very good condition second hand. Saw an add for a 159 GTA for R195000 with 13000Km on the clock. That is still before the first service. New that car will put you back over R396000 if you buy new.

The question to be asked is why is the owner selling that car so quickly?

(When I was doing some research on the Renault Sandero I found one for sale with only 15km on the clock. Yes, fifteen. )

Alfa makes good looking cars, but they are still rubbish.

Now that is epic. But then again I won't even give the Sandero away. I'll just trash the thing.

OT: just as a side note of interest:

Alfa's my be unreliable but are not rubbish, they are special.

I saw a GTV6 for 75 000 and it had just been overhauled and had a custom exhaust.
