Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe that the use of apostrophes in both instances of "it's" is inappropriateJammiBear wrote:Telkom is a world class telecommunications company which values all it's customers and provides excellent customer service at competitive prices.
It's victimization in the media and amongst a few disgruntled consumers is completely unfounded, and this recent litigation is both frivolous and petty.

You are correct - with the apostrophe is means It is. The ownership form does not have one.

Old schoolers would also argue for "victimisation" over "victimization."

Only the Americans turn most "s"s into "z"s.

It's actually becoming more widespread. When Stone-Ice starts doing it we know it's time to change.

At least there are a few people here who feel as we do. That see the value in a properly constructed sentence.

Re: SP's Grammar thread
I should have noticed that.
I have made sure that my work PC's copy of MS Word uses the UK ENglish dictionary. It picks up fewer "errors" that way, though it still insists that I begin each new line with a capital letter
and slaps me on the wrist for using the Passive Voice.

He had a feeling that this would appeal to you. Granted, I mentioned it without thinking of the probable outcome. Tar and feathering is not intended to be a pleasant experience. I shall have to rethink my suggestion.

Haha, received a letter from the company that does our HR stating what functions they expect me to carry out. The person whom typed it should be shot. Apparently I'm to discuss buying of "Consummer balls" with my employer.jamin_za wrote:I always make exceptions for people who speak English as a second language.Anthro wrote:I am shocked at the illiteracy of some people working in the 'professional' world.
There seems to be a bit of a double standard, especially with Afrikaans people as we expect them to be fully bi-lingual here in KZN, while we are a lot more tolerant of Zulu first language people...
I say if English is not your first language you are allowed to make a mess of it occasionally.
My tolerance is however limited to the spoken word.
When typing an email you have a spell checker which also polices your grammar, and if you are too lazy to use it to not look like an illiterate then I have little sympathy for you.

Right. English gurus, take your glasses out.
I've submitted a story onto a website, and I'm having a bit of a problem with one of the editors. They're saying that one of my lines is in the wrong tense.
I've highlighted the offending term in the quote in bold:
Apparently the tense of the passage is progressive past (if that makes sense to you gurus).
Who's in the wrong? Me or the editor? (Keep in mind, the editor lives in Canada)

The editor wants it to be changed into 'despairing' and for some reason, I just find it completely...incorrect.The laboratory was located deep within the Sahara desert, several miles underground. Although a private firm, they experimented and developed on all things supernatural. It proved surprisingly lucrative.
He inserted the capsule with clammy hands, waiting with bated breath. A pale sky-blue gas poured into the chamber on the other side. Breathing a sigh of relief, he wiped the sweat from his brow with a stained handkerchief. It was ready.
Pulling the capsule out, he walked to one of the computers and began to enter the data.
“Hey, Terry,” one of his colleagues said in a hushed voice. “Just to warn you, Requis is coming again.”
Terry gave a despaired groan. “Is he bringing any of his other Demon-Hunters?”
“No, not that I know of. Just him.”

Re: SP's Grammar thread
Both are correct - so it comes down to a matter of preference. You could also say Terry groaned in despair, but he would probably have a problem with that too. To say groaned Terry, despairingly - is clumsy but correct. That is probably what he is looking for.
Or“Is he bringing any of his other Demon-Hunters?” groaned Terry, despairingly.
Terry groaned in despair, “Is he bringing any of his other Demon-Hunters?”
