In at the deep end and needing advice
Before I begin, this is work-related, so I cannot mention specifics.
My line manager has, for reasons known only to herself and our Systems Administrator,
told me to prepare a report giving a convincing argument in favour of the use of one
vendor's software over another.
The snag is that I know nothing at all about the type of product that I am meant to be
persuading someone to use, what features are expected or only fluff and what functionality
will be relevant to the client.
I have googled some of the terms she used, but online propaganda presented by both vendors
means next to nothing to me.
She impressed upon me how important the work she has given to me is.
My second problem is that I don't want to go back to her and tell her that I cannot do it.
I have been pushing myself harder over the past few months and am hoping that not making a meal
of this job will win me more time away from data capture.
How, in general terms, does on acquire an adequate working knowledge of an arcane technology
and then explain why it is better than a competitor's product
Thank you

Cant you at least give us the products? have you not tried Googling "Product A vs Product B" and seeing if someone has not reviewed it already?

Sorry can't help you SP but I hate jobs like that where you are given the answer and then you have to find reasons to get to that answer. If she wants to sell that product she should know why

Callo, pm the vendors to me andi will have a look.
Always remember that its not always feasible to do what she has asked - purely because, if that particular product is NOT superior, and you "recommended" it, the fallout will be on you.
What i will suggests i (and what I do) is a comparison of the products - the pros and cons.
If you then recommend that product A would be better to use is one is looking for abc , but B will be better to use for DEF - you have ade sure you covered all the bases.
But lets start with the products and take it from there!

"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

Agreed. Find out what the products can offer and then make it plain and clear to the client that there are restrictions.
Remember a client will want the universe for R1and you need to tell them the basic truth. Be honest and stand your ground.

DUH!
Now why didn't I think of that.
Any more of this and I am going to have to ask to have my old handle reinstated.
I'll see what dirt I can find on Novell Groupwise and Microsoft Exchange Server then.

mmmmmm, Nick, my poor fellow, I was too late to offer you my valuable advice. It would have been based on some very good mind bending activities.
Trust me! I am a Doctor.

Re: In at the deep end and needing advice
Good day, Herr Doctor.
Mind bending activities you say?
What would that have entailed?
Your advice may be useful for my next assignment as well as the ongoing website work.

Re: In at the deep end and needing advice
What taking on all of this extra work has lead to is.....
Salary increase
I shall only be doing data capture under certain highly unusual circumstances
Moved out of the punchroom
Working for three departments
Meeting with my boss this morning in which she outlined my proposed change in job description and said that she
is also pushing for a change in job title for me
It sounds as though I shall be expected to get to grips with developing Access database applications

Says the Cat who has been doing it for yonks and is quite the pro.
I don;t even know whether they will still be sending me on a course for a few days or whether I am meant to learn this
in a very practical way, if you get my drift.

Either way - you will manage it. I may be a trainer but don't do well at being trained. I like to push buttons and see what happens. But I am happy to fly out there and train you (that is a hint in case you didn't know)
