Eyewitness News wrote:At least two people were slightly injured in an explosion in Yeoville on Wednesday.
Witnesses said it appeared a transformer exploded in a Telkom building on Ralleigh Road.
It is understood the front of that building was destroyed.
Firefighters were currently searching through the rubble for more people.
“There were two big bangs and a lot of bricks were flying around,” said a woman who was in the area.
Richmark Sentinel wrote: At least two people were injured, with a further individual trapped below the rubble and cars damaged when a massive explosion ripped through a transformer at a Telkom building in Raleigh Street in Yeoville earlier today.
"It was a massive explosion, within a kilometre radius there were windows that have been blown and vehicles damaged," said spokesman Percy Morokane.
"It shook the whole ground."
The cause of the explosion is not known at this stage, but it would appear to be electrical as shops and offices in the area were plunged into darkness. Bricks and debris flew as high as four storeys into the air.
According to other reports the blast left a 5 by 15m hole in the ground and flung a manhole cover 500m away.
While there were two people in the nearby vicinity, one of which is a Telkom employee who is in a very critical condition and the other a woman who is being treated for shock, concerns are mounting a third person who was believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Search and rescue teams and dog sniffer units were trying to locate him or her while the other two victims were taken to hospital. Emergency Service personnel are also on the scene combing through the rubble for clues as to the cause of the explosion
The explosion happened above ground but "it's very much unclear what happened", said Morokane.
It occured on the corner of Hunter and Kenmere streets, Yeoville.
