According to System Preference/Software Update, the new update is 768MB. I think I can handle that.

nah, you don't need uncapped, as you rightfully pointed out.
What type connection are you using? Dsl?

I Tried with my own Vodacom HSDPA connection and I also tried at my friends house with Highspeed wireless (a bit slower than my Vodacom) no luck. It locks down about 10% into the progress bar.

Try see if you can get the updates separately, not via the updater.
For some reason if you use the updater it times out, but if you download the actual files separately it is more stable (true for win updates on my laptop - not sure if mac have separate updates like MS).

Thanks, that's exactly what my PC friend suggested 5 min. ago. I found the file....busy downloading. The file look smaller than when I used the updater.

hey,
you cant install the 10.5.8 update from 10.5.2, you need to have at least 10.5.5.
i suggest getting 10.5.5, download it, install it, and then run 10.5.8.

http://support.apple.com/downloads/

also, use that download site for all the updates you need to run. and btw, the filesize in the updater isnt always accurate. i have had many downloads show as 30meg and in actual fact they were 80 or 100. rather download using that site.

let me know

Nope, I get the same depressing message when I try to install 10.5.5: "You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

On what patch level are you currently? Once you have that, take the next incremental update and go forward from there.

To be honest, it's probably quicker and easier to go to the shops and buy Snow Leopard (R300) and do an upgrade.

QFT!

Just buy the upgrade man... One of the benefits of Mac OS is that the upgrades are cheap as chips! It will save you a lot of time, effort and bandwidth in the long run, besides you'll have the media on hand.

Use it, don't use it...
