Proposed meet 19th september at germiston lake

The annual in-land branch of the concrete canoe race is happening next weekend.

every year the concrete society of south africa holds a competition for university and industry. Participants must produce and race a cement canoe in a 4 person relay race.

As part of my universities engineering project management course, we have to build boats and compete.

so i propose we have a meet at germiston lake on the day. There should be plenty of food and drink on sale.

will post a link later today.

TIA - This is Africa!

The whole point is to prove that objects can float despite extreme density/weight.

There is a 99% chance i'm going to be there..

Prime, do you think they would be bleak if I brought my canoe?

Monty, No. Just don't enter the competition. Fibreglass /= concrete.

Really? What's the difference?

Stuart, Fibreglass has a different colour and is semi-transparent.

Oh, right. That explains why I can't see through the concrete slab of our new extension at the church!

Not really. you can make ultra lightwieght concrete that floats. it feels really weird when you pick it up, you expect it to be heavier.
The point of the competition is to expose us to industry and in the case of UJ, to get the engineers interacting with other disciplines.

I think so. there is an anything that flaots category but I presume you have to have built it to enter it. you could try covering it in cement though

Most of the boats will be carbon copy's of standard canoes and kyaks, ours is somewhat unique, though we have yet to test it on the water. There are issues with getting access to the varisty pond :whistling:

High strength Cement + Biddim (spelling) cloth + fine aggregate + mold = cement canoe. its only a shell. ours is at max, 1cm thick. and 2 people can carry it.

tomorrow (friday), the final coat of paint goes onto it 8)

It's spelt biddum, used to use lots of it. :D

What're you using as aggregate?

What time will this event be taking place? I have a kiddies birthday party that day, but since this is about as close to Alberton as a PCF meet will ever get it may be frowned upon if I don't at least pretend to make an effort to be there.
