Filter Coffee - what's good?

Hey folks,

I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one here who loves a good cup of java, so after getting myself a nice filter coffee machine I thought I'd get some ides for roasts.

I am currently drinking House of Coffees Mocha Java and VIP Gold (which I love). They are both medium roast - not too strong.

Any recommendations for coffee to try? My machine takes the powder, not whole beans, though I suppose I could grind some if necessary.

I had a French Vanilla on Friday. Not sure of the brand but it should not be too hard to locate. Was yummy.

avoid the supermarket rubbish.. they pack it full of robusta - hunt down a local roastery, (Roastmaster/Bean There Coffee Company/etc), who will provide you with a superior product...

when I was in GP, Roastmaster's selection was generally very good...

I drink weiner musching(spelling?) or douw egberts filter coffee. I'd love to drink illy every morning but its a tad expensive. That said, i think its also intended for expresso.

Douwe Egberts is quite good.
Scarily enough my parents prefer "Koffiehuis".

Whilst this is true of all 'instant coffee' I am informed that the filter variation of Koffiehuis is indeed coffee!

the worst filter award has to go to SAA... i don't know what it is they think they're brewing, but that stuff would stop a whale shark at 60 paces

Ciro for me. Ricoffee when I'm lazy (which is the case 99% of the time). The issue I have is not being able to get my coffee hot enough.

I think my coffee machine is a dud...

Still refining my filter coffee making skills. The last batch was rather strong.

I have some Ethiopian filter coffee here. It came in an unlabelled jar, so I can't share more information. It's strong though. So you could always go to Ethiopia to get some coffee.

Mr_Norris, I have the same problem but it is so that it doesn't burn the coffee. If the plate is too hot - the coffee burns and gets bitter. I like it not too hot - then I can drink it black. For me the only reason to put milk in is to drink it faster (cool it down). With my machine I don't have to do that

anyone putting milk or sugar in filter coffee is due a smack... ruins the flavour...

SO, we were given an Illy espresso machine and having fixed it, I am in the mood to experiement with coffees. I have two vaireties of coffee beans to hand. N00Bish question but I presume I need to grind them before putting them in the espresso machine?

No Prime... Illy machines uses the beans whole.
No need for grinding like with inferior machines.

For each cup of espresso, measure one heaping tablespoon (7 grams) of ground coffee. If you're grinding your own beans, use a high-quality burr grinder on the fine-grind setting. It may take some experimentation to find the optimal setting for your grinder.

Indeed. Filter coffee as in vacuum packed powder is no good...

For proper coffee you need a Jura or equivalent machine and some decent beans...

Or you could just grind it with the right blender attachment like I have just done
