erm... I did.
And if I in my ignorance did, then I am pretty sure at least 80% of this forum is covered.

They actually owned something like 10% of Apple at a stage, not sure if they still have a stake

Currently, Microsoft owns about 0.0046% of Apple through a Private Capital Management fund and Apple owns about 0.39% of itself the same way so whether Microsoft ever held any power in the company is questionable at best.

What if MS still had a stake? That would be interesting.

How does a 2007 article (on a blog) make this any better ?
The 150,000 shares were convertible by Microsoft after August 5, 2000 into shares of the company’s common stock at a conversion price of $8.25 per share. During 2000, 74,250 shares of preferred stock were converted to 9 million shares and in 2001 the remaining 75,750 preferred shares were converted into 9.2 million of Apple’s common stock. All 18.2 million shares were sold by Microsoft in 2003.

Currently, Microsoft owns about 0.0046% of Apple through a Private Capital Management fund and Apple owns about 0.39% of itself the same way so whether Microsoft ever held any power in the company is questionable at best.

I thought my quote would actually answer your question.
What if MS still had a stake? That would be interesting.
Fact is they do have a stake, abeit questionable.

Let me rephrase then: what if MS still had a reasonable stake?

Well, if you read their motivation behind bailing out Apple initially, it was to serve their own interest during their anti-trust period.
If Apple went under, their argument of a credible existing competitor would have been moot. In that sense it was a symbiotic.

Having a controlling stake in Apple would be counter productive to this symbiosis as the anti-trust monopoly issue would be up again.
Sort of a no-brainer there.

Why am I even having this discussion?
