How relevant are politics to you really?

Post by Drakonis »

This'll probably degenerate into a rant from my end (probably will start as one) but I am really curious about how others see the need for a ruling political institution in this or any country. I have a couple of key questions on this as well but I'll ask them in a bit.

What use is an institution of government? Why does it exist?

Note: Not a social experiment, troll or bit of fluff concerning the memes for the month. Nothing will be quoted for the mag either.

I pretty much gave up caring about politics in this country a few years ago. Our government is a circus.

I believe politics means well, but, in reality, is just another for people to talk about doing something instead of just doing it

Well, it SHOULD be ensuring the safety and security of the country's citizens, but our government has failed pretty miserably at that for a long time now.

So... first question. Why do we need politics, politicians and the like to exist?

EDIT: That was put badly (restated my initial question). Should have said: Why couldn't we dispense with politics and politicians?

Shouldn't it be "How relevant IS politics?" Or am I just being the English n00b now?

I now avoid political discussions.

Politics aggravate my cynicism.

I actually brought up this question with Drakonis when he posted this tread.
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.

You also think it should be "is"? I'm probably wrong then.

We need a system of government. Lord Of The Flies is very accurate in describing what we would devolve into without rules and people of authority to enforce them.

Anarchy does not work.

That being said, none of the systems of government we have are perfect, democracy, socialism, communism, even fascism all have their good points on paper, but when you factor in the human element it all goes sideways.

Now, how relevant is this to me?
Only superficially. I don't really care who is in charge and what system is used, as long as I have a certain degree of freedom and necessary amenities.

I'm detecting a lot of apathy (towards authority in general) here. I can't say that it doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside either.
jamin is making an awful lot of sense to me lately though. I can't decide if this is a good or a bad thing.

how can that POSSIBLY be a good thing?

i don't have an issue with authority in general. and i have no problem with the authority delegated to the government as an institution. i respect jacob zuma inasmuch as he is the president of south africa. i respect his cabinet inasmuch as they have (legitimate) authority delegated to them (though i do find myself chuckling at some of the ministries that are deemed necessary in our cabinet). that doesn't mean i necessarily respect the PEOPLE in those offices, but the authority that goes with the office is legitimate.

in short, it's not authority that i have an issue with ... it's the ABUSE of authority that is so flagrant in our ruling government.

Jamin would be happy with a warm toilet seat, plenty of porn and an Internet that works. Politics and Politicians are a joke the world over. I realise now that I should have become one, it would have stopped me from having a peasants existence.

I'ts never too late. Develop a k*k, 'the world owes me' attitude and start making empty promises and threats.

Met a few politicians whilst working for the IEC and let's just say the approachable, pleasant ones were the exception to the rule... :?
MOOD - Thirsty

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.
