Rudderless [whine]
For the umpteenth time I approached my boss and told her that my job [data capture] has me bored witless.
She said that she would be prepared to explore options with me and asked me where I would like to be in a year's time. Well......I don't know what options are available to matriculants with very little experience in doing anything other than mindless work.
How does one go about finding out what is out there and determining whether one would be up to
a more stimulating line of work?

Nicholas, what are your areas of interest? Are any of them available within the company you currently work for?
My suggestion would be to find out WHAT jobs there are, then have a look at which one pique your interest.

Re: Rudderless [whine]
I started off as a data capturer in late 2007. Mid 2008 the company I was contracted to was reaching the end of their contract.
The job bored me to near death... But it was a job and it paid well.
I was told in 2 weeks, the end was neigh.
I started looking for another job, and found something way better (which goes beyond my abilies, and in some cases, my patience ).
Moral of my story: persevere, and look hard!

Re: Rudderless [whine]
It sounds like you still have yet to find what interests you. Go to a varsity and sign up for a career aptitude test to determine where those interests lie. You will surprise yourself. The one we did in matric, my principal said according to my test I should be a clothes designer. I laughed! A year later, my uncle, a professor at Wits, did a one on one personal test and surprisingly said that my tests show I should lead a career in the music industry.

Have a chat to her and ask her what things she meant.

My areas of interest are the sciences, doing crossword puzzles, messing around with computers [and playing games]UrBaN wrote:Nicholas, what are your areas of interest? Are any of them available within the company you currently work for?

I guess that much of what my company does involves using computers at varying degrees of proficiency.
The only department which sounds interesting to me would be our programming division, but I'm not convinced that I would manage programming.Idon;t know how to begin with and programming is high-brow stuff, isn't it?
Synthesis I may try to find someone reputable in East London who does aptitude tests. The one I did at school had me done for a carreer in the sciences.
Tribble I did chat to her again. She suggested that I tell her what my "career objectives" are and what I would like to be doing a year from now.

Depends on which language you start off with - I would give Python a try. Here's some tutorials to get you started.StarPhoenix wrote:The only department which sounds interesting to me would be our programming division, but I'm not convinced that I would manage programming.Idon;t know how to begin with and programming is high-brow stuff, isn't it?

You want challenges, but you don't want to try something interesting because it might be too challenging
Haven't I told you before not to keep underestimating your own intelligence all the time...

I think you should have a look at making their website a bit more interesting - or working on PowerPoint and doing amazing presentations. And as you know - I agree with Jamin. You don't give yourself enough credit - but we agreed to disagree on the matter

Re: Rudderless [whine]
There has been the odd potentially positive development.
This week, I was told to edit a batch of icons for one of the programmers and make the backgrounds transparent, which I duly did. The fellow in charge of programming has been notified, so there is a possibility that similar work might
come my way when I have idle time.
I have started playing around with Python following on Ron's suggestion and am trying not to look to far ahead as it
looks pretty daunting.

Re: Rudderless [whine]
StarPhoenix, Programming can be painful and can be fun. sometimes you'll bang your head on the desk and sometimes you'll enjoy the challenge. what put me off was the really silly things they wnated us to do in highschoo.
if you can find a copy of delphi 7 or an open source version, and i can find my highschool text books, i might be able to send you them its object orientated and about.com has loads of tutorials.
do you mind getting your hands dirty or are you happy keeping them to the keyboard?
