Need new tyres.

Post by Tander »

Howzit guys,

Well since my rear right tyre decided to get a 2" slach in it, I took the wheel to Hi-Q and they say they doubt they'll be able to fix it, however they are going to give it a try and see what happens. Sigh...

So, I asked them how much would new tyres of the same type cost..R765 per tyre!

So, my question is; does anyone know where I could get cheaper tyres from? Its for a 15" wheel, low profile, I am not 100% sure on mesurments, will go look just now, but think, 195s...

Secondly, does filling the tyres with Nitrogen really make that much of a difference? Its only 15 bucks per tyre...

Thanks all!

Last time i paid 650 each for a set of Yokohama's on my velociti which also had
15" 195's

That was about a year ago, the price you have there is about right.

take the measurement off the sidewall of the tyre (although likley to be 195/50/15" as that a pretty standard size for citi golfs, corsa etc). Take the phonebook and yellow pages and look up tyre places. call em and get a quote.

Nitrogen filling is a load of hippo poop imo. Sure it might make the tyre run cooler, but normal air is 78% nitrogen anyway, and the oxygen molecules are smaller than nitrogen, so should leak out first, leaving mainly nitrogen.
Only thing with nitrogen filling is it's far more likely NOT to contain moisture, which tyres don't like, and which often gets into the air pumped into the tyre at your local grudge.

Belix, Thanks man, will do that now. They not standard tyres as the car has TSW rims on it. At the moment the rear has an ugly steel wheel on, which is the same as looking at a chicks legs, thinking hmmm, very nice then gettin to her face and realising, hang on, where is my brown paper bag!! :(

Check right at the bottom, there's a nice list of tyres, 195's also R499 but like you said, you have a low profile......

Tyres aren't cheap but once you understand the science and technology behind them you can then understand the prices.

My father's car has 205/55 17" 92V Michellins (I can't remember the exact size - I do however know that they are low profile 17")

Each of those tyres costs a nice R2800, thankfully he knows a few guys in Michellin and got them slightly cheaper. His wheels cost R1800, so the thin strip of rubber that is called a tyre costs more than the metal wheel.

He has destroyed 3 tyres and wheels from hitting potholes.

And there you have a practical reason why you should not buy low profiles.

Awesome, thanks a lot Bruce!

KB; Ya, I understand why they are expensive. I must admit though, the S-drives I have on now are really awesome. I've tried to get them to squeel, and its not possible, they just hold and then some!

I wonder how much they are to replace....

absolutely correct!

Low profiles look amazing, mags look cool and some even make my mouth water but the quality of the roads in SA make both extremely impractical.

BTW I would love a Renault Megane Hatch F1 just for its low profile black mags - stunning shoes!

And that other 22% is not N2, its water vapour, CO2, O2 and other gases. which together with the heat from driving case corrode the steel bands in your tyres. :?

If you're complaining about the price of 15" tyres, don't ever, ever get runflats. They cost like R4k a tyre. And after you realize that when you pull off with launch control and a heavy foot, the smoke spewing out till 80km/h behind you isn't diesel fumes, you become a lot more conservative.
