Suggest weekend break-away spot

Post by Tribble »

Greetings,

I need to get away for a weekend but am at a loss as to where to go. Could you recommend places you know that would be good.

My needs:
  • * Not too expensive (there are 5 of us)
    * In the bush - preferably with game and birds - lots of them
    * Self catering pref but would accept lodge
    * Kids must not share the same room
    * Swimming pool or some form of kids entertainment
    * Walks and/or game drives options
    * Limpopo or North West - no more than 2 hrs from PTA (we offer 24hr support so need to be able to get to clients in need)
    * 3G or internet availability
I know I can google and I am - but I am stuck. I need to know if people enjoyed these places. Don't want the weekend to be a washout.

Thanks :love5:

Tons of lodges around the Warmbaths area. Mabalingwe springs to mind, I really enjoy it there.

I have been there for a photoshoot and it does seem nice. Did you stay in the Lodge or the Chalet?

Sondela

Mabula

Klein Kariba

Personally I would recommend Klein Kariba especially with the kids and I enjoy it there.
Price-wise will be the cheapest compared to a lodge and if you really want to see the big five and other animals, you can book a game drive at surrounding lodges.
I'll let the website explain more.

This shouldn't be in the Ward. It should be in the WANTED / For sale section and therefor because it's not IT related must then be removed. :P

Ah - but asking people here for suggestions is dodgy - and dodgy stuff belongs in the ward

I am really liking that last link - but looking at Mabula too now.

ROFL - not so quick my spring chicken. It was when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. There was dancing in the streets - it was an awesome place to live. Fontanas open 24 hours a day - music shops too. Art cinemas. It was the best.

I can second both Mabula and Mabalingwe, was at both in December and was soo impressed. From either you can go to Zebula (the Mabula golf course) where they have rehabbed cheetahs that they race for exercise once a day and they have lion and tiger cubs that you can go play with. Was truly one of my best holiday experiences. Mabula was awesome, big reserve, etc. Was there for old years.

I unfortunately don't have much experience up there, so I can't rate any place. I can say that seeing Synths link to Klein Kariba, that place looks well suited for the whole family. Mabula is the type of place I'd take my girlfriend too.

I do hope you have an awsome trip though and that you post plenty photos when you return.

Ooooh these places sound awesome. I agree with Mabalingwe and Mabula as a quiet getaway for two.

The place I choose needs to have great cellphone coverage for MTN. Klein Kariba people didn't even know what 3G was  Which resorts have great 3G coverage and how can I find out if they don't know what it is? Even Warmbaths couldn't help me.

I know Thaba Zimbi had decent MTN EDGE coverage (because of the iron mines nearby) , I was there in December. Trying to get a cheap place in the bush with fast internet isn't going to be easy - fast internet and nature somewhat contradict each other. There are a few lodges around there that shouldn't be too expensive. The weather is also great!

Stuart, oh mousey - I have looked on the coverage map but need real life knowledge. Just because it is on the map as covered - doesn't mean you get a good signal. Seems to be the case for most of these bush places.

And the edge is not for me - it is for hubby. I can easily be without internet but his clients (702, CapeTalk, DisChem, Radio PnP, etc) cannot. He needs to be able to log in and fix their mistakes. Hence the reason that I have to know how good the signal is.

Klein Kariba does have good coverage. There's a tower on the mountain next to klein kariba. Trust me, I've climbed it many a time. Furthermore Pretty much the whole of warmbahs has good coverage. Especially vodacom but the others are alright too.
As soon as you go to lodges then you don't even have voice coverage so good luck there.

Thank you. I will get back to them and ask what their normal coverage is like. Did you stay in the ravine or on the water's edge?

I live 5 minutes from there. I'm not gonna spend cash to sleep over. I regularly go for the day to braai, swim and entertain the family in the sun. The rivers edge is really cool though. The log-cabins are on stilts over the water. Then there's those peddle boat thingies and canoes and stuff to play around on.

The only thing that is not cool about them is they only have baths and not showers. I do not like baths - the thought of sitting in a hot bath with my dirt and skin cells just makes me feel yuggie.

But lol I can understand why you don't stay there. Can't wait to make the booking - the kids are so excited.
