Helmet Replacement?
Here's a quick question to the bikers.
How does one know to replace there motorbike helmet after an accident? My helmet didn't get broken or cracked merely badly scratched, although I did land on a rock and loose consciousness so I landed pretty hard.
I got no idea how a helmet is designed and so I'm not sure if its integrity has been compromised somehow. Wondering if I should just replace it anyway just to be safe.
I can post a pic or two.
Thanks, Cheers

Re: Helmet Replacement?
From what I understand the internal structure of your helmet will now be much less effective at absorbing the next crash landing. After a head plant most manufacturers recommend that you buy a new one or at the very least take it to a place that can check it for you (i think they use an xray machine). However I've yet to find a place in SA that can do the checks.
Sadly I think you'll have to replace it.

Re: Helmet Replacement?
Most helmets are single impact only. Only the high-end stuff are rated multiple impact. Even then, rather be safe than sorry. As an example, my one friend does these Lotus seven races, and as far as I can tell he's sponsored. He says that even if he drops the helmet, they immediately replace it, and they only use Arai helmets. So rather replace. If the knock was hard enough for you to lose consciousness, then I'd say that should definitely be replaced.

Re: Helmet Replacement?
Yeah, apparently even if you only drop your helmet it gets damaged and might not protect you fully when you do crash.
Re: Helmet Replacement?
+1
Better safe than sorry dude.

Re: Helmet Replacement?
Only saw this thread now..........ooops
Well its true replace after impact..........It mite not look cracked on the outside, but who knows what happened on the inside to the shell integrity.
Number one thing when buying a new LID is that the LID fits u like a glove, so try them on before u buy them. What the more expensive helmets give you is better ventilation, lower noise, better and/or removable pads, longer warranties, and lighter weight, so u can go for a cheaper one but then will have to compromise on these features mentioned.
The best helmet for one person may not be the best for the next, it's important to try on as many as possible because the shell size and lining vary between different makes
Have a look here, for a very intrusting read

Your head is very important 2 u right??.....so get the best for it
I would recommend
1. SHOEI
2. ARAI
3. AGV
4. SHARK

Re: Helmet Replacement?
Yeah I recall these pics from some other thread. Even if a helmet gets totally trashed in a crash, if you can walk away after that then the helmet was worth every cent, no matter what its condition after the spill.

Re: Helmet Replacement?
I have been shopping around but a lot of dealers don't have much stock of anything because of the new year. I really liked this one which was a KBC, goes for about R700. I will have a proper look once the dealers re-stock.

Check out Mosskays and Full throttle methinks, they always advertise in BikeSA, don't know about their prices, but they have a vary large selection.
