SourceJohannesburg - South African consumers can expect huge savings in telephone and internet costs in the next 12 to 18 months thanks to the mid-year launch of the second transatlantic
"A high-capacity fibre-optic cable stretching across the seafloor from America to Africa promises to slash costs of both Internet use as well as calling costs by providing the first true competition to the existing Sat-3 cable that is part-owned and mostly controlled by Telkom," said Michael Alter, MD of PrimeTel - one of South Africa newest telecoms operators.
Alter said the costs of using the internet are set to fall, followed by calling costs as consumers gravitate to Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).
Some industry experts are talking about figures close to an 80% reduction in costs - which means that South Africa is currently teetering on the brink of a telecommunications revolution.
"As it stands, South Africa really lags behind the rest of the world when it comes to telecommunications competition and costing structures. Even compared to other developing countries, such as Chile, South Africa has a long way to go," said Alter.

Makes me verry happy. Seing as the new job I just took requires me to have a DSL line at home to work over. I need one as I will constantly be sitting at home working over the net. We have a virtual office. If this realizes I can see some companies moving a lot of their people to this kind of setup where they don't need to go in to the office. There are numerous fields where you don't need the employees at the office and can thus save on office space costs while also causing less staff problems.

Admit it Ruad ... you just want to avoid peak hour traffic on the highways. Which is not a bad thing, of course.

Re: Telecom costs set to tumble
Well you are correct on that actually. I don't like driving and as such I don't own a lisence as a matter of fact. This is perfect as I don't need to spend 3 to 4 hours a day in traffic and I still receive a Joburg related salary. Which more than compensates me for the internet line I have to use. It also saves the company in computer hardware as I don't want to use one of their computers. I will be sitting at home so it is more convenient to work on my own computer which I am used to. I can also get up at 07h15 in the morning if I want. Or go to gym, which is just across the road, during lunch.Stuart wrote:Admit it Ruad ... you just want to avoid peak hour traffic on the highways. It is, however, kind of a scary thing that we have to depend on Telkom's outstanding reputation for reliability in order to get our work accomplished.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I'll believe it when I see it, as i'm waiting well over 3 years now for them to replace cables that's been stolen in my area . Called vodacom and applied for a signal booster and received and installed by them a week ago, hopefully telkom will wake up in the next decade or so, if we are lucky may be added

Re: Telecom costs set to tumble
I doubt it will make a diffrence, reason for saying so is we don't have 10mb local lines and only 4mb international.
I believe that most of that bandwidth will go towards dedicated services, that is highly expensive.
