Windows Live Gold is now free, did you or would you ever use the service to play online? And if so what do you think?

Nope. Don't have the connection at home to allow gaming.

Oh, wait. It's for the pc. I still won't use it, I can't afford ADSL so I don't play on-line anyway.

Is it really free?

Seems like they will allow silver accounts to play online. Gold is therefor not free. Only online play is. You will need a gold account if you wish to purchase anything with MS points.

On the Xbox?

This service holds absolutely no appeal for me. I lack the online connectivity at home to partake in the features it offers, although even if I did, it just seems like another attempt by MS to monopolise something, while many of the "features" offered are available as standalone applications already in use by many online gamers.

No. The less we sell our souls to the devils (Microsoft and Telkom), the better.

I most definately second that notion!

To be honest, I have both an XBox and a PC, and I wouldn't use this service, unless paid to. In both cases, until I get an uncapped ADSL line, it still works out far too expensive. For example: Buying the game from retail outlet (PC): between R250 and R400... Buying the game online: R250.00 - R400.00, size of download: 7GB (for most new games). Cost per Gig bandwidth (semi-shaped) R89.00...

Total Cost:

Retail: R250.00 - R400.00 (add R30.00 for local delivery if I'm too lazy to go to the shops)
Windows Live: R873.00 - R1,023.00 per game (including the R623.00 for bandwidth to download it.)

Point and case... Rather go retail... :D

Another add on to my point...

I am into "instant gratification" when it comes to my gaming... so, even with a 4mb ADSL line, I would have to wait more than 3 days (because of the semi-shaped bandwidth) to download the game... Retail is "same day as desire"...

Actually, the PC version of Windows Live is now free, for those of you that seem to be confused, it's Microsoft's online gaming service for windows. Check out this Link.

My reply:

I think it would a good idea to try it out, however it doesn't have a community nearly as large as Steam. I think that the lack of support for the service was the reason for this change so maybe Microsoft has figured out that we don't all dive after everything labeled "windows" and have finally decided to give people a little bit of an incentive to join.

I would love to have the time to play online games. For the odd occasion I have ventured into the fantastic worlds stored online, I have used Steam - and I was happy. I suppose, when I get the new PCF disk with the promised WOW surprise on it, I may be tempted to use MS Live Gold. But life dictates that I exist here on the outside of fantasy - so it will not become a habit. Sadly.
