Windows "Workstation" 2008

From Slashdot:
Disenchanted with Vista? Why not convert Windows Server 2008 into the lean, efficient, reliable 'power user' OS that Windows should be? InfoWorld's Randall Kennedy, who has been using a converted 'Workstation' 2008 as his primary OS since hitting a wall using Vista as a Visual Studio development platform four months ago, says the guerrilla OS has turned his Dell notebook into a well-oiled machine that never gets sluggish and rarely needs to reboot. Those interested in making the switch should check out win2008workstation.com, a clearinghouse for 'Workstation' 2008 tips and techniques. Kennedy also offers a link to a Windows 2008 Workstation Converter utility for those looking to quickly convert a fresh Server 2008 install without hacking the registry or manually installing/enabling lots of services and features.
Original article

I'm definitely intrigued and interested. If I could get hold of a copy of Server 2008 (maybe I'll speak to my network admin very nicely), I'd definitely like to try this, since from what I've heard Server 2008 is one thing that Microsoft did get right. That being said, there's some very good points made both for and against this in the original article comments.

I think jamin could probably provide some interesting info/opinion on this, he is a server tech after all so probably has some experience with Server 2008.

Just install the CP filter before readin his posts

I read this, this morning... aparently its a 13ITCH to get the drivers working for standard things and takes alot of modding the vista drivers....

I've got a client running Server 2008, must say, pretty impressive. Haven't really mashed it but am willing to give it a bash. .

Fire, how big is the 2008 trial download? I'm in for a reformat, and I'm tempted to give this a try...

EDIT: Never mind, clicked on link - sadly, too big for my cap.

I think it's the same as the final, around 1.8 gigs.

I'm running final release Enterprise at the moment in a VM and it's awesome. Still using it with all the server features so not really as a workstation and probably won't change my Vista install before Windows 7 but it would definitely work very well when converted with the use of these guides that are available.

2008 looks good, I have played with it a bit - seems like it would make a better desktop OS than Vista, quite honestly - if you aren't planning to use your rig for gaming.

Another drawback of using a server OS is that you need a server version of your favourite AV, and those can be quite expensive.

Gaming is the only thing I haven't tested....

These typical MSI installers will refuse to install if it detects a server OS.
The solution?
SuperOrca!!

Just remove the OS check from the Launch Condition part of the MSI.

And the desktop version runs perfectly fine on a server OS, thank you very much!!!!

PS: I am not condoning anything illegal; if you just want your software to work, this is one possible workaround.

:D :D :D Guys , you realize the more you talk about this the more it sounds like what your really talking about is linux. A fast everyday os that is smooth in operation, stable and does not play games. :D :D :D

And the whole but it could work if you do this , also sounds abit like " will run under wine"

Wonderful!

Just as I was wondering how a Windows thread could last an entire page without a 'nix troll rearing it's pimpled, greasy head...

:P

Actually gaming isn't all that bad, from what I've read.
And at least the games will install and run.

MS is getting it right, who the hell needs Linux now?

On the left hand side, look for LaunchCondition.
Then on the right, look for the offending error message string...
