I had an old 1.3 VW citigolf that was getting about 13-15 litres per 100km and about 8km per litre.

Recently I bought my first new car, a Peugeot 206 1.4 that literally drives on fumes. I'm getting a good 16km per litre and about 6 litres per 100km ultra urban. I'm saving a good R200 PER WEEK on petrol!

I also had a 206 1.4l before my Polo. It had brilliant consumption for a petrol car. I drove 810km on 50l of fuel = 16,2km/l and at that stage I already had over 120000km on the clock. At 140000km it started giving me small issues which cost me money and I sold it. Was my first new car. Biggest problem with it in the end was the resale value...

I think my next car will be french.

Both Clio's that I owned previously ( a 1.4 16v and a 2.0 16v) gave outstanding fuel consumption, and I've seen two posts on here raving about small french car fuel consumption.

Their build quality might leave something to be desired, but the french sure do know how to build good engines

I was impressed with my car this weekend. I drove to Dundee in Natal and got 790 kms before the fuel ran out. It is a 60l tank. Oh - it is a Scenic II btw.

What about a hybrid system in the yaris? It would need to be a smaller version then the Prius because of weight and size but essentially you would get down to about 4l. That's what we need.
Personally, I would absolutely love to see something like that.

I don't really care about how powerful the car is or how fast it can go (I don't exceed speed limits if I can help it) - but with current and predicted fuel prices, fuel economy is definitely a factor. If I could afford a Prius, I'd definitely buy one. Give me a cheaper version of that car and I'd be like Pedobear in a junior school playground.

2008 1.6i (i think) Polo Classic, 10l/100k. But there's something wrong with the manual gearbox, it only changes at 7,000rpm (rental car).

The main factor when determining fuel consumption during everyday use is not engine size or power output, it's the weight of a vehicle. Heavier vehicle will always get worse consumption. The only influence engine power has on fuel consumption is if there is more friction (4 vd 6 vs 8 cyl) inside the engine and what technologies it uses (carb vs fuel injection vs direct injection) which are major but not as bad as the weight of the vehicle.

If you have a powerful car, you only need to feed the car a little bit of petrol to get it to do what you want to, a less powerful car needs a heavier foot. Larger vehicles need the heaviest foot and stop start is where you'll see most of the consumption issues.

A Subaru WRX-STi driven sensibly will probably have better consumption than a 3.0i X5 driven in the exact same manor.
