Seeking advice on my first bike

Okay so im turning 16 next year and want to take some suggesions to my dad.

They don't really want me to ride a bike but if i go prepaired maybe i can....

I don't want something that can go fast! Only for use in town.
I want a cheap bike that will last long is gentle with the fuel and has a decent service plan.

Thus far i thought of these three.

Honda CBR125
Honda GLH125 e-Storm
Honda NXR125

Out of these i like the NXR125 the best but im open for options.

It doesn't have to be a honda anything that wont give me hassels with spares and services is fine.

Edit - Looking for something below 17K

I think you'd be pretty happy with any of those bikes.

The NXR125 has drum brakes front and back which is a bit poor, ideally you would at least like to have a disc brake up front.
The NXR also comes with dual-purpose tyres which is good if you think you may have a few dirt roads to navigate. However if you are going to be riding +85% on the road then you will find you will wear the dual-purpose tyres quite quickly when compared to a normal road tyre (like the CBR has).

Long distance (+60km or so) the NXR and e-Storm will be more comforable than than the CBR, your wrists will get quite sore after a long ride on the CBR.

CBR will be more expensive to service than the other 2.
The NXR will be the cheapest i'd imagine as it only needs tweaking every 6000km whereas the other two are every 3000km or 4000km.

None of them will break, unless you hurl it down the road.

You could also look at some of the Yamaha offerings:
The XTZ 125 E and the YBR 125 SD are possibilities.

Remember to factor in all the riding gear (a good helmet and a jacket are the absolute minimum) into your budget !! Can easily add another R2000 to the bill.

Let us know what you choose :)

Well, i drove a CBR when i was still in school. It was a pretty nice bike, good fuel consumption and so on. I'm not sure what they cost now, but mine was like 23K, which is a little pricey...

Yip the CBR has a nice sporty look! But is a bit to pricey for me... :(

And has to be serviced to often.

I notice you say next year, so now I'm not sure exactly when you plan on buying your bike, but if it is indeed next year as I'm assuming, you can always look at alternatives such as the Suzuki GSXR-125 - To be honest, I don't see it anywhere on the Suzuki SA page yet, but there is a 2008 model due. You may also want to look at the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, though it should be a lot faster than all the bikes mentioned. Both these bikes are superbike-styled, like the CBR 125.

Hope this helps a bit :P

(
PS. You can always do what I did: dive straight into the deep end and get yourself a GSXR 750
)

You're not allowed to get anything larger than 125cc when you're 16 Syko...

//Edit: Maybe a second hand CBR125? I don't like the new ones

Yip! and i have a verry limited budget!

And my parents........

I wont even go faster than 80km/h anything bigger than a 125 will be a waste imo.

Muffinman mentioned This one what do you guys think of him?

In that case I'll say stick around and what's up with the GSXR-125 (But hey, I'm a Suzuki fanboi)

Yeaaaahhhhh riiiiiiiight! We all said that ;)

And I think you should look for something in PTA, and have someone ship it over. How hard can it be finding someone heading in that direction that can hook a trailer? Or hire a trailer in Middelburg and drive to PTA and back?

That's a scooter... not a bike...

Yeah, if you wanna be a chop/cheapskate get a skoota, if you want to keep some integrity, get a bike :P

Though, at the current price of petrol, scooters are so damn light..

I might not be good with pc's but all i can tell you is that a scooter is a deathtrap. If its your first bike go for a small Suzuki (400cc), its still light on fuel and you will be able to handle it. Secondhand you will be able to buy something decent and still have some bucks for your next pc upgrade.

Please no scooters! :pukeleft: :pukeright: :pukeleft: :pukeright:

Seether when you have your learners you are not allowed to go above 125cc! For me my pc is just fine ATM i can play crisis and most importantly Rappelz! Im sorterd for now...

I will wait for a PC upgrade if i can get me a bike!:D

Why do you want to be in Middelburg OTC?

cause then my option would be even more tempted (if you were to go second-hand) as I would be in your area and for a second-hand bike mine is still in very good condition...

(did you get my PM btw? )

Ok. i get it. Still go for Suzuki. It's the best by far. Honda stays in the shadow

Honda makes some of the, if not THE most reliable cars/bikes out there, and for a first bike a CBR125 is fine. Suzuki doesn't have nice 125's in any case ;)
