Reactos - alternative to Windows

We found this at work the other day I thought it was worth a mention.

http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html
ReactOS® is an advanced free open source operating system providing a ground-up implementation of a Microsoft Windows® XP compatible operating system. ReactOS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.ReactOS is the most complete working model of a Windows® like operating system available. Consequently, working programmers will learn a great deal by studying ReactOS source code and even participating in ReactOS development.

ReactOS has and will continue to incorporating features from newer versions and sometimes even define the state of the art in operating system technology.

In short, ReactOS is aiming to run your applications and use your hardware, a free operating system for everyone! ReactOS is a replacement for Windows users who want a Windows replacement that behaves just like Windows.

Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.4 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature complete and is not recommended for everyday use.
Ok so its not complete yet but if you can't get to grips with Linux and Windows is annoying then you should try this.

Surely M.S. will find illegalities with another O.S. being able to run Windows "designed" apps.

Apparently even Visual basic 5 runs in this aswell (Not that I use it though) But there are apparently some games that will run on it too. No DirectX yet but the software takes the D3D call to opengl or something and that way the game runs, much like in WINE. They have tested Diablo 2, Quake 3 and Half-life from what I read.

Only thing I have a problem with is that they also use a start button...

I am sure they will, if ReactOS ever gets out of the alpha stage - which I doubt.

It would probably happen. But it still is nice to hope this OS (or another one) will be an alternative to Windows.

well if they get it stable and running well
ill use it :)

I got it running EXE files no problem :) :) (just double click them and they work, No Q's Asked)
and personally i dont really like using WINE so if ReactOS ever leaves ALPHA stage
then ill dual boot React and Linux :)

My first question: 32- or 64-bit? (I'm guessing 32-bit), and secondly, is it available on any local news servers or sites? I'm cappped

As long as they don't use any dll's or other bits from XP or NT they should be safe. However, I just don't see any use for this. With DX10 becoming more popular XP will be dated soon enough.

Well it is a good thing though. They do warn you that the OS is unstable on their site, unlike some other OS I know and use...
